The Lord has not promised that everything will be easy for you. There will be difficult experiences for you to negotiate requiring a great deal of composure and confidence. It will be quite easy to misunderstand and misinterpret them and so find yourself disturbed and distressed. Withhold judgment and human reason for such will not prove helpful or fruitful. There will come the answer of heaven in its providential time and you will not be left nursing failure. Look to Him to strengthen and fortify and He will do and enable your life to grow amidst the happenings and such will glorify Him. He will take you through everything to ultimate profit!

“Not that I speak in respect to want: for i have learned, in whatsoever state I am. Therewith to be content” – Philippians 4:11

Contentment isn’t getting what we want but being satisfied with what we have. It is a restful state of mind, spirit and being with your circumstances whether good or bad.

A widowed woman believed the message of a prophet and so saw a major miracle take place when things really looked bad. All she had left at a time of drought was a cruse of oil and a little meal that looked to be her last. There was no more in the store. Her faith was challenged. Elijah said ‘make me a little cake first, and bring it unto me, and after that make for you and your son” – 1 Kings 17:13. She discovered that Jehovah and the prophet truly cared for her future and so supernatural provision took place. There was no need for her to overly worry about the days ahead for she discovered ‘Jehovah Jireh’ in her extreme situation. And He is still up to performing for you amidst your impossible circumstances.

FALSE SECURITY – Jeremiah 49

It is possible to live in a seeming impregnable position and begin to sense a great strength of security. The conviction takes over that because of the powerful defenced situation that no one and nothing will be able to overtake and overcome. This is how the Edomites felt in their lofty stronghold. It states: “you are proud because you live in a rock fortress and hide in the mountains” – v16. They fostered the idea that because they were in such a favoured place they would continue and ever be a threat to others but never threatened. They would never be mastered!

The warning comes from the Lord that this will not be the case and that they have every reason to be concerned because they will be subjected to conflict and conquest. The forecast is that it will become as Sodom and Gomorrah, a place ruined by violent enemies. All that they thought would be alright would prove to be vain reasoning. Simply trusting in the natural surrounding and circumstances would be seen to be a false factor. All that they had pinned their faith and hope in would be a complete let down because the true God had not been their trust and confidence. Reliance on external consideration was totally inadequate.

There has to be a constant examination in life on the real grounds of assurance and hope. Many people have a false sense of security and know it not. Mere reliance on things, placement and property can never be a substitute for a true and real trust in the living God. The best and only worthwhile assurance of protection and blessedness is to be found in God alone. It is good to be able to say with the psalmist and know it: “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble” – Psalm 46: 1. He is secure and all who trust Him possess His security.
