In order for something to be better and become more useful and acceptable, they have to be refined, that means the removal of stuff that is detrimental to its quality and satisfaction. When God saved you and brought you into His choice family it was an act of good-will and grace. You were not immediately the finished article or perfect vessel; there were and are things that had to be attended to bring about His ultimate design. He is ever at work to bring about the complete work of grace and destiny and this requires a deeper purification that will enhance both person and ministry. He may pull you aside for a while to bring this about. Do not resist because He knows what He is doing because He will bring you forth to be a better person and do a better job!

“I can do all things through Christ who strengtheneth me2 – Philippians 4:13

You are made strong by Christ to do what he wants you to do and that is the impossible!

Peter in his message to early Christians reveals that they have been blessed: “According as His divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him that hath called us to glory and virtue.” You are called to be like Christ and manifest  His quality characteristics in an ever-increasing capacity. These are the things to added with all diligence – vv4, 5.

4/. The Quality of Temperance – v6. It has to do with having a moderate life-style where all is under real, spiritual control. Not being indulgent in anything especially of a destructive nature. This demands a quite a lot of healthy restraint and avoidance of anything that lead to the complete undoing of a person. Christ desires that you take the reins in your life, nature and affairs and to see that all contributes to your well-being, growth and relationship with God. Many people have lost it because they have allowed something that is perverse and so harmed them completely. Paul speaks about keeping disciplined at all times in everything – “But I keep under my body, and bring it under subjection; lest that by any means, when I have preached to other, I myself should be a castaway” – 1 Corinthians 9: 27. One cannot afford to be out of control but like the athlete concentrate on keeping fit.

What a tremendous debt is owed to those who have willingly given themselves not only to Christ but have been prepared to labour unstintingly for Him in ministry to others! Paul names a lot of people in this section who had been alongside of him in so many situations, doing so many things and caring for others in the cause of Christ. They had worked and helped without a lot of show and ado and made his toil much easier and better by their presence and contribution. He could and would not forget the major input that each had personally rendered.

In mentioning the first three people, a woman by the name of Phoebe, and a couple called, Priscilla and Aquilla, he distinguishes certain factors about them. Phoebe had been ‘a succourer of many, and of myself also” – v2. What a source of strength she had been to those who had come to faith in Christ and of a strong support to the leadership! The man and wife team had utterly devoted themselves to helping the churches and were of a fearless quality. They were but a sample of the high excellence of people who served in the birthing and blessing of the Church and deserved a place in the record Book and also a word of thanks.

There are two things that come out of this reading. One, all believers must become real workers and helpers for Christ within His kingdom. None should shirk their true duty in lovingly serving others when it is in their power to do so at any time. Two, there must be a grateful recognition of those who have given themselves unreservedly in labouring for the blessedness of the saints in words of gratitude, and where possible, in some way of recompense. It is good to say thank you!
