 Rev. E. Anderson

As you look on the world with its peoples, how do you re-act? Are you like your Lord and Saviour, who looking on the multitudes was ‘moved with compassion”. The reason being, because they were ‘lost’ and like ‘sheep without a Shepherd’. In other words there was no one around apart from Himself who really loved and cared for them. Do not let the spirit of the world and society hold and govern you but seek to be possessed and motivated by Christ’s love. The apostle Paul could claim: “For the love of Christ constraineth us” – 2 Corinthians 5:2. If people are to be changed it is through Christians inspired and controlled by divine affection and compassion. Be assured: it still works wonders and miracles today!

The need within Christendom has always and ever will be for ministers and people who have truly developed the habit of prayer. As the disciples observed Christ praying they sensed he knew how to reach his Father and get answers and so solicited: “Lord, teach us how to pray!” Note: not how to preach or effectively do something else but to pray. James sought to encourage others in this ministry. He was a man of prayer and it is said of him: “His knees became calloused because of the amount of time spent on them”. In James 5 he uses Elijah as an example and there are things to be learned from his praying.1/. He was an ordinary man just like you – v17 ‘was man’. 2/. He meant business because he prayed ‘earnestly’ – v17. 3/. He kept at the task until the mission was complete –v18 see also 1 Kings 18. He secured the well being of his people. You, too, can learn how to pray for everyone and about everything. Discover its power1

Years ago, I was a big city boy preaching in a small country town. I wanted to learn everything “country” so that I could fit in. As I was searching for Widow Jones’ farm, I got lost on the back roads. I saw a farmer walking into his barn so I stopped for directions.

He was just beginning to milk his cow but took time out to tell me how to get to the Jones farm. “By the way, ” I asked, “Do you know what time it is?” He leaned in to the udder of the cow and said, “12:30.”

I started to leave but I just HAD to know. I told him, “Hey, I’ve just moved from the city and I really want to know the ways of the country. How could you tell what time it was?”

“Sit right here on this stool, son.” I did.

“Now, grab hold of that udder.” I did. (Before this, my closest experience to this was grabbing a milk carton).

“Now lean into the cow and lift up on the udder.” I did.

“Lean over and look right over there on that wall. See that’s a clock. When the little hand is on the 12…”

When God measures a man. He puts the tape around the heart instead of the head. “the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart” – 1 Samuel 16:7

A DIVINE LAW OF LIFE – Romans 8: 1-17

This is a vital section of the Bible that teaches clearly by what means the Christian life is to be lived. It refers to a divine law of life that is released into the being of a person that comes to dynamic faith in Christ – v2 “For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me fee from the law of sin and death.” Two laws are mentioned: one that is deadly and destructive, the law of sin and death, and the law of divine life that is more powerful and negates the former and enables the individual to live life as God has desired and designed, in freedom and in holiness. Instead of being a slave and victim to sin there is a positive life of righteousness and goodness.

The believer’s responsibility is to make certain that there is the constant presence, power and leading of the Holy Spirit in daily living. Knowing the delight of divine sonship means there is the inspiration and guidance of the third member of the Godhead in being and behaviour. Like Christ, there is the input of the Spirit on a regular basis so that sin does not become the influential factor but God. The consequence: it is life, peace, assurance, physical quickening etc.

It is obvious that the Christian must be constantly surrendered and exposed to the Holy Spirit if there is to be fulfilled spiritual living. The onus is upon making sure that there is a continual responsiveness to this new, divine partner that offers the ability to live at the highest possible level. As argued in vv12, 13, the child of God is not in debt to the carnal nature but to the Spirit of God to live under His impulsion and compulsion and so produce a life that pleases God. Let Him be your spiritual dynamic everyday and so glorify God and construct a noble character.
