 Rev. E. Anderson

Whilst other Christian leaders, workers and saints are an inspiration and blessing to you, do not altogether focus on them because at some point they are liable to fail and let you down. The disappointment can be quite bewildering and shattering. Take heed to the Biblical encouragement of Hebrews 12:2 “Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith”. In keeping your eyes on Him you will discover He will not fail you in any way and He will enable you to maintain your fait, life and witness for Him. He is inside of you to impart all the wisdom, strength and gift that you require on a daily basis and quietly make you an inspiring example to all.

In this verse Christians are encouraged to be ‘fervent in spirit’. Moffat interpreted it like this: ‘Maintain the Spiritual Glow’. Donald Gee, a leading Pentecostal in his day wrote in my brother’s little memory book – ‘Keep on Fire’ It is a very relevant exhortation by the apostle. The Israelites were commanded to ‘never let the fire cease to burn on the altar.‘ They had a duty to keep the flame alive and burning. The Lord has kindled a holy and heavenly fire and flame in you and it is your personal responsibility to maintain it. How do you do it? Mainly on a daily basis. 1/. Through Prayer – Ephesians 6:18. 2/. Reading and Feeding on God’s Word – Acts 17:11. 3/. Being ever Filled with the Holy Spirit – Ephesians 5:18 “Be being filled” in a continuous sense. 4/. Being a Constant Witness for Christ and Winning Souls for Him– Acts 1:8. 5/. Maintaining Good Christian Fellowship – Acts 2: 42; 1 John 1:3.

The classroom setting of one of Peanuts comic strip, on the first day of the new school year, the students were told to write an essay about returning to class. Lucy wrote, “Vacations are nice, but it’s good to get back to school. There’s nothing more satisfying or challenging than education, and I look forward to a year of expanding knowledge.”

Needless r to say, the teacher was pleased with Lucy and complemented her fine essay. In the final frame, Lucy leans over and whispers to Charlie Brown, “After a while, you learn what sells.”

The temptation to say ‘what sells,’ what others want to hear whether it is true or not, is always with us.

“Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself, and the wife see that she reverence her husband” – Ephesians 5: 33

A marriage may be made in heaven, but the maintenance must be done on earth.

There is a clear exposition and description of the battle that occurs within the inward being of every individual. Within each person there is the presence of a righteous law that seeks to guide in the true course of life and relationships. A conscience is also known which witnesseth to what is right and wrong. These factors are present in order to help in pursuing a good and wholesome conduct that produces a worthy character. Unfortunately, there is also the presence of the evil principle of sin that resists what is good and it is a powerful bias that rules.

So strong is this predisposition that it takes over. It is argued that “For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do” – v19. This is an admission of the dominant and dictating force of sin. Man is plagued with this evil propensity that controls his conduct. There is a real desire to be free from this wicked bent and prejudice. Who or what is the answer to this awful dilemma? The answer is afforded in v25. Christ alone can break the monopoly of sin and how effectively He does it by means of His death and resurrection. He gives a new law of life that is stronger and more powerful than the law of sin and death – Romans 8:2.

Even after being marvellously saved by Christ and indwelt by the Spirit of God, the old, sinful, carnal nature would seek to resurrect itself on a regular basis. The Christian has to learn to live by the new law of life given by Christ through the Spirit of God. It is possible to constantly keep the nature of evil subdued by reason of the Christ living within through the third member of the Godhead, the Holy Spirit. You can live a complete victorious life today over this inward bias because you have some stronger and greater on board that masters you and all evil.
