DAILY MEDITATIONS

CONFESSION TIME – Acts 24

Things were now to open up on a far greater scale for the apostle as he was called to defend himself against charges of disturbance and riot. His accusers were present to put their case before Festus who was to judge the issue. All they could do was to fabricate matters but Paul used the opportunity to decisively share his faith. He admitted to being a follower of Christ who is the Way and asserted his utmost confidence in Mosaic Law and the Scriptures. There was also the confession of his hope, quality of life and godly motive of living. In no way did he seek to create conflict amongst the people and agitate a religious disorder.

The judge must have been quite impressed by his defence as he decided to await the commander’s version on what had occurred. He even gave Paul freedom and to allow his friends to cater for his needs. In the forthcoming days he sent for him often and God’s servant was not afraid to face this political leader with the truth. It was an occasion where he divinely confessed the truths of the Gospel and this man was brought under immense conviction but was not prepared to change. He said: “Go away for now, when it is more convenient, I’ll call for you again” – v25. Really the appropriate moment was then for him to settle matters with God.

The Lord desires to use believers at all times in making confession of their faith in Him to others. In varied circumstances and seasons He gives the privilege of being able to declare to others the reality of the Christian faith and life. Make sure that you are wide-awake to the door He opens to you to bear a clear testimony to the workings of His grace and power in your life. Those around are dependent upon your clear confession and the golden opportunity to receive Christ and His love.

A CALL TO DIVINE FAITHFULNESS

Malachi 3

One of the essential values that the Lord is seeking for, is faithfulness in every area of life. This is a matter of major concern to Him, that there should be a fidelity, loyalty and consistency in every way. This should be provoked and promoted in His own elect household by reason of His own faithfulness. It is certain and sure, one can depend and rely upon God at all times under all conditions. He makes a tremendous statement on this front in 3: 6 – “I am the Lord, and I do not change”. In the midst of their unfaithfulness, HE IS FAITHFUL.

1/. THERE IS TO BE FAITHFULNESS TO THE LORD’S INSTITUTION – 2: 10-16

The Lord was grieved because there was a breach amongst them with regard to the marriage covenant. He makes it plain to them that ‘He hates divorce.’ As far as He is concerned, it should not be. The men-folk should prove trustworthy to their wives and honour their commitment. As far as He was concerned their offerings meant nothing to Him if this thing evil prevailed.

2/. THERE IS TO BE FAITHFULNESS TO THE CONFESSION OF THE LORD’S NATURE – 2:17

There was a questioning of His justice. They were trying to make out that the Lord favoured evildoers. The divine word and history proved beyond any doubt that this was not the case. As moral Governor and Judge He held loyal to the matter of righteousness and they should hold up to the integrity of the Lord.

3/. THERE IS TO BE FAITHFULNESS TO GIVING TO THE LORD – 3: 8-12

There was a real break down here and they let the Lord and themselves down in not conforming to His requirements with regard to it. The divine direction and command of the law was to tithe to the Lord. It was an order and they were under an obligation to give gladly and willingly in the light of His goodness to them. This being so, they would see the faithfulness of God in an abundant manner in the way of blessing. They could not out-give Him.

4/. THERE IS TO BE FAITHFULNESS TO THE LORD’S WORK – 3:13-15

They were saying: “What’s the use of serving the Lord? What have we gained by obeying His commands or by trying to show the Lord Almighty that we are sorry for our sins?” Their reasoning was altogether wrong and attitude, too. They needed to straighten both out before Him so that they would truly serve Him.

Thankfully, there were would be those who would respond and express a genuine reverence for the Lord and give Him deference. Because of their love and loyalty they would not come unstuck because a divine record would be made and kept. He will regard them and their faithfulness and make them His special treasure and heritage. It will become obvious to all that divine faithfulness counts in the saints.
