Rev. E. Anderson

Thought for the Day follows an instructive theme for everyday of the Week. In the next few days we will be considering ‘victory’. It is important to be aware of this fact. Originally, man was made to be a victor by God. There was no way that God designed him to fall foul to defeat and disaster. God wanted to make a prince and ruler of him and that would turn out a winner.

Nehemiah was summoned to accomplish a seemingly impossible task. The walls of Jerusalem had been flattened by invasion and over the ensuing years had been reduced to rubble. The people who were called alongside of him to rebuild the sacred walls were themselves just beginning to recover from a long ordeal. Plus the fact, they had enemies around that desired to harm and hinder the job. Really it was a mammoth task to undertake to do!

But one man under the heavenly inspiration was enough to stir and animate to this major enterprise and exercise. They knew he had left a cushy job to take this huge responsibility and they became united with a mission to see the miracle occur. And so the wall was built to the dismay of their foes. As each person and family assumed a place and spot to work, they all amazingly became builders. This joint exercise did a great deal to their morale and unity for the future.

It would have been senseless not to become involved and spend time just looking at the site. But the leader and people saw beyond the immediate and sensed with God’s help a new beginning could take place for the Holy City. God has called you to work for Him and to achieve the impossible amidst the circumstances you are in. It is time for you to pick up the trowel and say: ‘It can be done’. Do not languish in the negative but rise and be amongst the builders in this day and generation.

Down in the Valley with my Saviour I Would Go

It is good to know that in all of life’s experiences the Lord is at hand and ever with His people. Whether in the valleys or mountain tops, He is present to make Himself known and assist in every way possible. So today, enjoy His Company and rejoice that this will always be so.

“I wrote this hymn in 1878,” the Rev. W. O. Cushing tells me. “Longing to give up all for Christ who had given his life for me, I wanted to be willing to lay everything at his feet, with no wish but to do his will, to live henceforth only for his glory. Out of this feeling came the hymn, ‘Follow On.’ It was written with the prayer and the hope that some heart might by it be led to give up all for Christ. Much of the power and usefulness of the hymn, however, are due to Mr. Lowry, who put it into song.

Down in the valley with my Saviour I would go,
Where the flowers are blooming and the sweet waters flow;
Everywhere He leads me I would follow, follow on,
Walking in His footsteps till the crown be won.

Follow! follow! I would follow Jesus! Anywhere, everywhere, I would follow on!
Follow! follow! I would follow Jesus! Everywhere He leads me I would follow on!

Down in the valley with my Saviour I would go,
Where the storms are sweeping and the dark waters flow;
With His hand to lead me I will never, never fear,
Dangers cannot fright me if my Lord is near.

Down in the valley, or upon the mountain steep,
Close beside my Saviour would my heart ever keep;
He will lead me safely in the path that He has trod,
Up to where they gather in the rest of God..

BRING IT TO GOD – Isaiah 37

It definitely looked as if this gigantic problem would not go away as Hezekiah now receives a threatening letter forecasting destruction. The attack is to be put on hold for a while but the news is that there will be a renewed batter of offence against the city. There was to be not let up of pressure to king or people as the letter shows that the intention remains for conquest. The wise course of action to be adopted was to place the matter before the Lord in His House and leave it in His hands. It was up to Him to do something. And He did! He was not to sit idly by without giving His mind on the prevailing difficulty.

The prophet receives a word to put the king’s mind at res, assuring him in a number of ways. He was told plainly that he was fully informed of the blasphemy of the enemy and his wicked designs. There was no need to be anxious because the Lord would do precisely to him what he had done to those he had conquered. He would put hook and bridle on the whole unit and destroy them – v29. One angel was sufficient to deal with the situation. A whole army is disposed on by one of heaven’s messengers and all done in one night – v36. The threat was over!

It could be that you are in a position where you feel threatened. The danger is very real and you sensed exposed and most vulnerable to the point of humiliation and devastation. How essential it is that you do not panic but put yourself under the covering and working of the Lord. He is able to see and write off all that oppresses and stands as a formidable opposition. He will be present to act in His own way on your behalf. At this point learn to put yourself and the situation entirely into His hands and watch how He will preserve and vindicate you and your cause.
