THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

Thought for the Day follows an instructive theme for everyday of the Week. We now turn our thoughts to another important factor if there is to be positive dealing with God. The word is ‘joy’, a spiritual reality to be entered into if one is to know God to live a true life and extract the best from life.

JOY – A MEANS OF DIVINE STRENGTH – Nehemiah 8

Nehemiah was born at a difficult time when Israel was recovering after a long period of slavery an domination. They had been captives in Babylon and life had been brutal and demanding. In a marvellous manner the Lord had opened up the way to get back to their homeland but on return, things were in a mess and it was easy to lose heart and a sense of fresh excitement absent at the possibility of the impossible. They were going to have to have a positive spiritual attitude to cope.

Thankfully, God sent them a leader with the right mind and mood to get things going. Nehemiah gave up a cushy job as the heathen king’s cup bearer to respond to God’s call and go and stir and motivate His people. He rose to it and began to inspire and move this people to action and out of a heap of rubble began rebuilding the broken walls. With the help of God they were able to achieve a significant work. He motivated them with God’s Word and revealed to them what would be the means of galvanizing them – “the joy of the Lord is your strength” – v10. He would be along and inside to give sublime encouragement. The word encourage imply means – ‘to put heart into a person’.

It still is the same truth and message now. Your task may seem beyond you and so discouragement be present at the outset. Look beyond the challenge and know what it is to be immersed with His delight and you will begin to get stuck into the task, knowing you were made for this. Instead of letting it get on top of you, the opposite is manifest. A trail of triumph takes place terminating with a rapturous witness of a task well one.

Join all the Glorious Names

Author, Isaac Watts was the son of a schoolmaster, and was born in Southampton, July 17, 1674. He is said to have shown remarkable precocity in childhood, beginning the study of Latin, in his fourth year, and writing respectable verses at the age of seven. At the age of sixteen, he went to London to study in the Academy of the Rev. Thomas Rowe, an Independent minister. In 1698, he became assistant minister of the Independent Church, Berry St., London. In 1702, he became pastor. In 1712, he accepted an invitation to visit Sir Thomas Abney, at his residence of Abney Park, and at Sir Thomas’ pressing request, made it his home for the remainder of his life. It was a residence most favourable for his health, and for the prosecution of his literary…

This is a choice hymn that come from this inspire writer. It truly throws the spotlight on Christ and highlight outstanding facts about His person and work. It leads to a recognition an admiration of Him who created an leads the Christian community

1/. Join all the glorious names Of wisdom, love, and pow’r,
That mortals ever knew, That angels ever bore;
All are too mean to speak His worth, Too mean to set my Saviour forth.

2/. Great Prophet of my God,  My tongue would bless Thy name;
By Thee the joyful news  Of our salvation came;
The joyful news of sins forgiv’n, Of death annulled, and Thy life giv’n.

3/. Jesus, my great High Priest, Offered His blood, and died;
My guilty conscience seeks  No sacrifice beside:
His pow’rful blood did me redeem, ’Tis worthy of my heart’s esteem.

4/. I love my Shepherd’s voice: His watchful eye shall keep
My wand’ring soul among  The thousands of His sheep:
He feeds His flock, He calls their names, His bosom bears the tender lambs.

5/. My Saviour and my Lord,  My Conqu’ror and my King,
Thy sceptre and Thy sword, Thy reigning grace I sing:
Thine is the pow’r; behold I sit In willing bonds beneath Thy feet

DAILY MEDITATIONS

DIVINELY TAUGHT – Psalm 78

The psalm is focused on the matter of divine teaching, as there are vital lessons to be gathered and known from what has taken place in history. What has occurred and has been recorded must be shared so that each subsequent generation can be properly informed of God’s gracious dealings with His people. All must be constantly acquainted with the way the Lord had shown His law, love and power to His covenant people. Their spiritual history was to be a cause for incessant meditation. What a pageant of grace and power it had been!

One of the main reasons for this procedure is affirmed in v7 – “So each generation can set its hope anew on God.” As the past is genuinely reflected upon it was in order that dynamic faith towards God in the present would be provoked so that there would be the continuing display of God’s omnipotence on their behalf. The reflection was to pave the way for more manifestations of the Lord. It was to prove to be a healthy exercise. What had occurred was but a start of what the Lord wanted to do on a much greater scale.

Take time out today to think and consider all that has happened in and through God, in the two Testaments, in Church history and in your own life. Reap the blessing of this practice in a heightened increase trust in God. From this will proceed more of the acts of the Lord in your affairs. You will not be simply reading other people’s testimonies but so much will be happening and abroad in your own life of a divine order that you will be able to share with others.

JOY – THE LORD’S PEOPLE ARE HIS JOY – Zephaniah 3:16,17

Twice it is affirmed how much the Lord is excited and enthused over His people in Zeph 3:17 “He will rejoice over you with joy . . . He will joy over you with singing”. It has to be realized and sink home in the minds and hearts of those whose trust is in the Lord, that they are His special pleasure and treasure. They are really the apple of His eye and how delighted He is with and over them when they are most responsive to Him. It is quite remarkable and noteworthy that He should be thrilled and go into raptures with those who are closely associated with Him.

One of the great objectives of Jehovah was to make Israel a praise to Him so that they would be the envy of nations. Other peoples would see the close affinity with their God and note how much He was immensely pleased with their faith and conduct. His delight would know no bounds as they made it their priority to give Him cause for joy.

We who have tasted the blessings of His grace and salvation in and through Christ and now represent His Family, should likewise give Him every reason to sing with joy over us. Just as an earthly father gets enormous inspiration an excitement over sons that are capable and successful, and sings their praises, so the LORD would like to do the same over you, today. Let the Godhead in heaven find tremendous delight as it beholds your belief and behaviour. Set heaven a singing and ringing over your faith and commitment to heaven’s values and virtues.

SACRED SONGS

There is a Story Sweet To Hear

It is true to say that there is no story like the Gospel story, the message of Jesus Christ’s coming and the extraordinary difference it has made to our world. Literally millions throughout the centuries have heard it and come to a dynamic faith in Him and been miraculously transformed. No regrets, only a grateful appreciation of His love and salvation, and to think, it has only begun! Heaven awaits its consummation!

1/. There is a story sweet to hear, I love to tell it, too:
It fills my heart with hope and cheer, ’Tis old, yet ever new.

Refrain

’Tis old yet ever new; ’Tis old yet ever new;
I know, I feel it’s true: ’Tis old but ever new.

2/. They tell me God the Son came down From His bright throne to die,
That I might wear a starry crown, And dwell with Him on high – refrain

3/. They say He bore the cross for me, And suffered in my place,
That I might always happy be, And ransomed by His grace -refrain

4/. O wondrous love! so great, so vast, So boundless and so free!
Low at Thy feet my all I cast; I covet only Thee – refrain

DAILY MEDITATIONS

IN QUESTIONING MOOD – Psalm 77

Pondering the words of the psalmist here it is most obvious that he is in a real questioning mood. The reason for this stems from the fact that he appears to be in deep trouble and though he engages in a true spirit of prayer to the Lord there is no response. the point The point is made in v1: “Oh that God would listen to me!”  He then reaches a further stage where he exclaims: “I am even too distressed to pray” – v4. There is no doubt that he is perplexed and overwhelmed in the situation he finds himself in. It was not a welcome experience and it had repercussions in raising a series of questions that were of a personal nature.

He states in vv7-9 six probing, challenging questions and they are all directed to the Lord. In the New Living Translation he asks: “Has He slammed the door on His compassion?” He is bewildered, lacking understanding and possible faith in his immediate trying circumstances.  He reaches the point where he feels the Lord has switched in his attitude towards him – v30. But in this dilemma he refuses to let go of God but calls to memory his past dealing and goodness – vv8-20. In the depth of his being he senses the real nature of His kindness.

There are occasions when it will seem that the heavens are like brass and that the Lord has switched off from you in listening to your prayers. How to negotiate this sort of situation is not easy.  All kinds of untoward questions arise and the tendency will be to query the Lord and His care. When faith is put on trial it is possible to wrongly react and think He is in the wrong. Assert your love of Him and trust Him. You will discover that His love, compassion and power are still towards you.

FURTHER NOTES ON THE MINOR PROPHETS

(28)

DIVINE EXPECTATION

Micah 7

The prophet senses personally a powerful conviction from the Lord within his being as to what is to be his lot. He has nothing to fear or be alarmed at because he has performed his task and his whole estate and future is in the hands of Jehovah. At a time of upheaval and grave mistrust at all levels without, He has an anchor of hope within that is able to hold and at the same time give certainty of greater fruition. Birthed within is divine expectation that is sure to materialize. His confidence will be duly rewarded at the right time.

1/. HIS EXPECTATION IS THAT THE LORD WILL HEAR HIM – v7

He has not only been the messenger speaking for the Lord to the nation, he is in the happy position of being able to talk to and have communion with the Lord in prayer and share his problems. He knows he will have the ear of the Lord and that his petitions will not be a vanity. When once the ear and attention of the Lord has been obtained there is the guarantee of answer in His time.

2/. HIS EXPECTATION IS THE LORD WILL SAVE HIM – v7

It is evident that he is seemingly placed in extreme situation of need, but that in no way disturbs or perturbs. Such comes along to try and agitate and aggravate but he is not overwhelmed in the slightest. The Lord is sufficient for every crisis and emergency. His saving power and ability is well known.

3/. HIS EXPECTATION IS THE LORD WILL DEAL WITH HIS ENEMIES –vv8-10

There are those that wish to do him harm and see him come a cropper personally. He does appear exposed to malignant and arrogant foes but he is confident that he will come through this ordeal with flying colours. It may be the Lord is allowing him to go through such in order to enable him to sift and sort himself out to positive good.

4/. HIS EXPECTATION IS THE LORD WILL SHOW COMPASSION – v18

This is an outstanding passage that asserts His grace in forgiveness to the point of the absolute removal of all their sins. The anger of the Lord will cease and His good will is extended to the remission and removal of all evil. Such will be placed in the Sea of God’s Forgetfulness. This ensures for Israel a new start with glorious prospects.

CONCLUSION

The hope is given of seeing much more of God’s goodness based on the oath of the covenant given to the patriarchs. So the prophecy ends on a high note with the assurance that the Lord will honour His word.

JOY – IN THE ARK OF GOD’S PRESENCE – 1 Chronicles 15:1-28

David had experience great disappointment in his first attempts at bringing the ark of God’s presence to the Holy City. Because he had one it the wrong way thing had gone abysmally wrong an he was truly upset. He discovered however that the Lord had not got it wrong but he had and was willing to get things done as heaven required. Instead of a state of sadness there was to be an overwhelming state of gladness. This ay was going to be marked with immense delight because the ark of God was being placed where it should be – Zion!

Because he knew what he was doing was acceptable to the LORD, David pulled out all the stops an le the procession n with untold pleasure an praise.  It says: “David went to bring up the Ark of the Covenant out of the house of Obededom with JOY” – v25. Along with all the people they let the LORD know how glad they were to be engaged in such a procedure an procession. Nobody was in any doubt a to the king’s thoughts and emotions on that memorable day. He gave the lead an they gladly followed on in the jubilation.

Our Christian faith an worship should be characterize by spontaneous rapture an delight in the knowledge of who the LORD is an what He has wrought for us. He came to bring some enthusiasm an excitement to the mundane of life in the revelation of His dynamic salvation. As this is birthed and released it will make all the difference to living and testimony to the world of the joy of experiencing God and true worship. Once the ark of His Presence is installed true pleasures abound!

SACRED SONGS

He  is not a Disappointment

This is a spiritual song that truly elevates an magnifies Christ. It proclaims that in no way will He let people own who turn to Him an believe. He is more than capable of answering anyone an anytime an in the opening words of each verse, they will discover He is not a disappointment! That is something for you to personally discover an to begin to testify to.

1/. He is not a disappointment! Jesus is far more to me

Than in all my glowing day-reams I had fancied He could be;

An the more I get to know Him, So the more I find Him true,

And the more I long that others Should be led to know Him too.

2/. He is not a disappointment; He has saved my soul from sin;
All the guilt and all the anguish Which oppressed my heart within.
He has banished, by His presence, And His blessed kiss of peace;
Has assure my heart forever That His love will never cease.

3/. He is not a disappointment; He has healed my body too:
What a tender, mighty Saviour, There is naught He cannot do!

When on earth He healed diseases As they touched Him in the throng;

Has He lost His heart of pity? Is the risen Christ less strong?
4/. He is not a disappointment; Christ is coming by and by;
In my heart I have the witness That the day is drawing nigh.
All the scoffers may despise me And no change around may see;
But He tells me He is coming, And that’s good enough for me.

5/. He is not a disappointment; Christ is all in all to me—
Saviour, Sanctifier, Sov’reign—The unchanging Christ is He;
He has won my heart’s affection, And He meets my ev’ry need;
He is not a disappointment, For He satisfies indeed.

DAILY MEDITATIONS

GOD IS WELL- KNOWN – Psalm 76

What is related here in this brief psalm is found in the last 5 verses of Psalm 40. It must have been an issue that had not gone away or had been answered or that it was a matter that was repeating itself. At least the writer knew what to do when other people put him through the mill. There were those who sought to blame and shame him and bring him to a state of disgrace before others. He acutely felt the fact that they really wanted to hurt him and make things difficult.

The answer to this was God and the proper use of prayer. He could talk to Him about the issue and ask for His involvement. He could turn it round and cause the shame and disgrace to be on his opponents. Having placed the matter in God’s capable hands he fills his mind with greater considerations. He affirms, “But may all who search for you be filled with joy and gladness. May those who love your salvation repeatedly shout, ‘God is great’” – v4 New Living Translation. He knows the LORD will not let him down but will show up and act on His behalf and honour him.

There are occasions when people who dislike you will do all in their power to denigrate so that you will feel under enormous spiritual pressure. It is easy to resort to carnal methods and wrongly retaliate. It is possible to engage in the same kind of procedure especially when it is protracted. There is, however, a better and higher way to deal with it. When humiliated honour the LORD in prayer and ask for His action and He knows how and when to effectively deal with these evil people. Instead of you being disgraced you will be ultimately honoured in a greater way.

One of the best an glorious emotions of life is a pure sense of true joy an ecstasy. It can be evident  in earliest childhood, throughout life an later years. It is good to view it within the context of the  Scriptures.

JOY – A MISSED OPPORTUNITY – Genesis 31:20-31

Unfortunately, father-in-law, Laban, and son-in-law, Jacob, did not hit it off in relationship and neither did their close relatives. It was a very unhappy unit and when Jacob is called by God to leave and cut out a new future he unwisely does it under-cover and makes things worse. Instead of gracious and happy send off there is deceit an subterfuge that was not healthy. Jacob should have trusted God in the leaving and allowed Him to work things out. Things were in a mess when Laban caught up with him! The Lord extracted him out of the awkward circumstances.

His father-in-law reproves him and states how things should have gone – “Wherefore dist thou flee away secretly, and steal away from me; and didst not tell me, that I might have sent you away with mirth, an with song, with tabret, an with harp?” – v27. He certainly made a good point whether he was honest in it! It could be said in hindsight, a much better departure could have been known which would have registered delight and pleasure and not ill-will and fear.

Lessons should be learned from this incident. When it is known that folks are due to leave and go their new pathway it is wise, proper and right to make it a cause of gladsome remembrance. It is more wholesome to be positive in joyful relationships than to reflect a hard attitude and show no good will and kindness. Even if things have not worked out well with others, it is better to part in high spirits. NEVER SHOULD THE OPPORTUNITY OF DOING WELL BE MISSED!

SACRED SONGS

O Safe to the Rock that I Higher than I

The Christian believer in life needs an ever-present Rock and Refuge that is adequate to meet every situation of a troublesome kind that comes his/her way. Life can suddenly put one in a precarious state, hence to be able to resort to a safe and sure place. The LORD is the one best suite to fulfil these roles an has prove it throughout the centuries. Sing an believe this now an prove yet again His all-sufficiency.

Author: Cushing, William Orcutt , born at Hingham, Massachusetts, Dec. 31, 1823, is the author of the following hymns which appear in I. D. Sankey’s Sacred Songs and Solos:— 1. Beautiful valley of Eden. Heaven. 2. Down in the valley with my Saviour I would go. Trusting to Jesus. 3. Fair is the morning land. Heaven. 4. I am resting so sweetly in Jesus now. Rest and Peace in Jesus. 5. I have heard of a land far away. Heaven. 6. 0 safe to the Rock that is higher than I. The Rock of Ages. 1. Ring the bells of heaven, there is joy today. Heavenly Joy over repenting Sinners. 8. We are watching, we are waiting. Second Advent anticipated. Mr. Cushing has also several additional hymns in some American Sunday School collections

1/. O safe to the Rock that is higher than I, My soul in its conflicts and sorrows would fly.
So sinful, so weary, Thine, Thine would I be; Thou blest Rock of Ages, I’m hiding in Thee.

Chorus:
Hiding in Thee, Hiding in Thee,
Thou blest Rock of Ages, I’m hiding in Thee.

2/.  In the calm of the noontide, in sorrow’s lone hour,  In times when temptation casts o’er me its power,
In the tempests of life, on its wide, heaving sea  Thou blest Rock of Ages, I’m hiding in Thee. [Chorus]

3/.  How oft in the conflict, when pressed by the foe,  I have fled to my Refuge and breathed out my woe.
How often when trials like sea billows roll  Have I hidden in Thee, O Thou Rock of my soul. [Chorus]

DAILY MEDITATIONS

THE REAL PROMOTER – Psalm 75

Matthew Henry,states “Though this psalm is attributed to Asaph in the title, yet it does so exactly agree with David’s circumstances, at his coming to the crown after the death of Saul, that most interpreters apply it to that juncture, and suppose that either Asaph penned it, in the person of David, as his poet-laureat (probably the substance of the psalm was some speech which David made to a convention of the states, at his accession to the government, and Asaph turned it into verse, and published it in a poem, for the better spreading of it among the people), or that David penned it, and delivered it to Asaph as precentor of the temple.”

From vv6, 7, in speaking of promotion and demotion, David certainly discovered from a personal standpoint that the Lord could and did do both. He had experienced at the good hands of God exaltation from being a humble shepherd to that of honoured sovereign. Likewise he had observed the demotion of Saul and others, too, in the course of his lifetime. He had found it was far better to place his life and future in the wise and capable hands of the Lord and to serve the cause of truth and righteousness. At the end of the day, the wicked horns of human authority will be cut off and the righteous will be exalted.

How assuring to know that as you please the Lord by doing that which is good and right that He will cause things to move in your favour! There is no need to pull strings to try and get ahead of others in the church or the world. You do not have to manipulate and make a way for yourself but let God do all the promoting. He has a way and time in which to bring those forth whom He would see honoured.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

Thought for the Day follows an instructive theme for everyday of the Week. We now turn our thoughts to another important factor if there is to be positive dealing with God. The word is ‘life’, a spiritual reality to be entered into if one is to know God to live a true life and extract the best from life.

LIFE – IT IS RESURRECTION LIFE – John 11; 1-27

Christ has the distinct pleasure and joy of raising three people from the dead, a young maid, man an Lazarus, the brother of Martha an Mary. He possessed the authority of being able to perform this extraordinary ministry and made at least three families happy by doing so. No one can imagine the tremendous happiness that was created when this awful negative was handled in such a loving, incredible fashion. In each instance, Christ clearly revealed He was indeed the Resurrection and the Life

But then He had to face the trauma himself and His story proves that He was up to this outstanding challenge. He was put through the most excruciating suffering and death. And He really died! Many folks would not have survived the ordeal but He surrendered His life. The soldiers made sure He was truly dead.

It is said that ‘you cannot keep a good man down’; and this was true of CHRIST! A thousand boulders could have been placed at the door of His tomb. He would have walked through the lot. He vacated the body then renewed it and was raised with a Resurrection Body, capable of anything. Christians in every generation have believed in and served a Christ who is gloriously alive and alive to save and serve His people with grace an power. It is vital that you know Him in this regard.

SACRED SONGS

I Feel like Singing all the Time

This is a very rousing an stirring song that certainly impact the spirit an lifts it into a great feeling of delight. When the believer is in this mind an mood there is a beautiful sense of divine, triumphal pleasure at being to focus on praising the LORD. It is a very good therapy for the soul. Engage in it today an prove its worth!

One day in a children’s meeting in Utica, New York, the Rev. E. P. Hammond writes me, “while I was explaining how Jesus loved us and gave himself for us, I noticed a bright-looking girl bursting into tears. She remained at the inquiry-meeting, and with others was soon happy in the love of Christ. The next day she handed me a letter of which this is a part: ‘I think I have found the dear Jesus, and I do not see how I could have rejected him so long. I think I can sing with the rest of those who have found him, Jesus is mine. The first time I came to the meetings I cried, but now I feel like singing all the time.’ This prompted me to write the hymn, but I had no thought of its ever being sung…

Mr. Spurgeon was very fond of this hymn. At the first meeting in his building one of his deacons said to me, ‘This Tabernacle will seat six thousand grown people, but there are eight thousand crowded into it to-day.’ Three thousand could not get in on account of the crowd. Every child had one of our hymn-books, and all united in singing this hymn which they loved so much. It has been sung in our meetings in nearly every state in the Union, and translated into many languages. We sang it in our daily meetings in Jerusalem, near where Christ was crucified, and away in Alaska, two thousand miles north of San Francisco. Thousands of children sang it in Norway and Sweden, day after day.

DAILY MEDITATIONS

A CALL TO REMEMBRANCE – Psalm 74

Things were traumatic and difficult. The Holy City, Jerusalem was in a dreadful state caused by the invasion of enemies who had destroyed the divine sanctuary. Everyone was in a state of desolation. There was an air of being God-forsaken, which was intensified by the mocking attitude of their enemies. It had all occurred because the people had rejected God, so in turn God had rejected them. They were paying a severe price because of their ingratitude and sinful behaviour. There were no miracles or prophetic signs amongst them – v9.

How long does this dreadful state have to go on in the light of God’s grace and power? – Vv10, 11. There is a call of remembrance of all that the Lord had done in the past for His people when He was amongst them and in charge of proceedings. An important appeal is made in v20 “Remember your covenant promises”. This is a vital consideration with God and His people. The psalmist lays hold of it in sure hope. The situation can be turned by reason of the fact that God has assured He will do good to His Elect Household. He can stand on God’s Word and plead it in the midst of this awful predicament.

In observing what is happening with regard to the Christian Church, it appears to be under siege. Evil forces are bent on its ruination and desolation. They would mock her state. There is a need for those who will stand in the gap and make intercession to God on her behalf. It is time for the Church to be renewed, restored and become a praise to God. Call to remembrance that Christ has made promise regarding His Church and her destiny – Matthew 16: 18. She is to succeed!

The word is ‘life’, a spiritual reality to be entered into if one is to know God to live a true life and extract the best from life.

LIFE – THE FRUITFUL EXISTENCE – John 15:1-8

Throughout and at the end of existence on this planet, there should be some real evidence of good left behind that is commendable and repeatable. So much fruit of goodness created and cultivated by Christ ought to be birthed an maximised in an throughout life. The reason why you have been united to Christ is in order to become like Him and manifest a quality character of life an service that truly blesses a host of other people, family, those in the Christian community and beyond.

He called Himself the Living Vine and those joined to Him are known as ‘living branches’ producing incredible fruit. What He envisages is a Christian believer becoming most fruitful. He affirms three stages; ‘fruit, more fruit and much fruit’ and He works for and looks for such to occur. Life is to become better and highly productive and prolifically fruitful. He looks for it Himself and does not want to be disappointed

He states it quite simply the secret of a fruitful existence: “I Am the Vine, you are the branches, He that abideth in Me, and I in Him, the same bringeth forth much fruit” – v5. The Christian above all must make sure that their roots are in Christ The consequence of this dynamic cohesion is the beautiful an bountiful display of a life simply loaded with all that is attractive, wholesome and satisfying. Christ is at work on an in you to bring this to pass.

He has done for us what no other can do by providing salvation from sin and eternal judgment, liberty from Satan’s rule and the positive blessing of a dynamic relationship with God here and now, besides other choice things.

2/. Jesus, I must trust Thee,  Pondering Thy ways;
Full of love and mercy  All Thine earthly days:
Sinners gathered round Thee, Lepers sought Thy face:
None too vile or loathsome  For a Saviour’s grace – refrain

3/. Jesus, I can trust Thee, Trust Thy written Word,
Though Thy voice of pity I have never heard:
When Thy Spirit teacheth, To my taste how sweet!
Only may I hearken,  Sitting at Thy feet – refrain

4/. Jesus, I do trust Thee, Trust without a doubt;
Whosoever cometh  Thou wilt not cast out:
Faithful is Thy promise, Precious is Thy blood:
These my soul’s salvation Thou my Saviour God – refrain

VAIN REASONING – Psalm 73

The opening remarks of the Psalmist reveal that he had no doubts as to the nature of God -v1. God was good to His people, especially to those of wholesome motivation and living. However the rest of the Psalm shows that he did have another real problem about so many wicked people who he felt seemed to have a better time of it and he became envious of them –vv 2-12. Nothing appeared to go wrong for the proud. They appeared to disregard God, even casting a snook (a rude gesture) at Him, and everything fell right for them. A question arises: “Was it for nothing that I kept my heart pure and kept myself from doing wrong?” –v13.

He sought to understand this major problem and got his answer from the Lord –vv16-20. It was not an easy thing for him to come to terms with but as he went into God’s house he had his eyes opened by the Lord. It was revealed to him that these people were not really in a comfortable situation as he imagined. They were on a slippery path and slope that would be to their ultimate undoing. What they had enjoyed in the present was a mere dream that would pass away and then hard reality would before them. They had missed out on their eternal destiny!

All have to learn to properly evaluate life and things. It is easy to be mesmerized by things and comfort and not pursue God and essential matters. The most precious factor and special possession is having and knowing the Lord, also to have His care and attention in life on a daily basis – vv23-26. Everything and everyone may fail, but not Him. Be like the psalmist who comes to this conclusion: “I have made the Sovereign LORD my shelter, and I will tell everyone about the wonderful things you do” – v28. You are on a winner when He becomes all in all to you.

LIFE – THE ABUNDANCE OF LIFE – John 10: 7-18

Jesus Christ never left or leaves issue in doubt. He speaks clearly and shows things as they really are so that one can come to know what is true, to be believed in and experienced. He uncovers the fact that there is an evil one, Satan, and he is a thief that comes to rob mankind of what they need. Referring to Satan, Christ said, “The thief comes only in order to steal and kill and destroy” – v10. Never at anytime as he sought the good and happiness of any person but offers stuff in the ultimate that leads to their undoing and disaster.

On the other hand, how different is Christ. He unfolds His mission and commitment; “I came that they may have an enjoy life, and have it in abundance to the full, till it overflows”. It is not a thimble but more that a cup-full that overflows. David used the expression – ‘my cup overflows’. It is true to say that Christ desires to pack your life with all that is good and beneficial, leaving no room for regrets. People do not have to chase all over the place, spend infinite finance to discover real pleasure. No, He has the answer at all times for everyone.

These words are addressed to you: “I am come that you may live and that you might have life abundantly”. The LORD has more than mere existence in mind. He not only will to come and live inside of you, He desires to open up your life on a grand scale and begin to witness the impossible taking place in and through you. Why not find out today the truth of His words and Himself, too, and begin to LIVE.

But the sky is bright and cheery, Since the fullness of His love came in.

’Tis redeeming love in Christ my Savior, In my soul the heav’nly joys begin;

DAILY MEDITATIONS

THE REIGNING LORD – Psalm 72

This psalm is credited as coming from the heart and pen of Solomon. Within its contents and expression is the desire that the ruling monarch will be one that will reign in love, justice, truth and righteousness and that it will be a period when great prosperity will be known. All that is good and best is longed for so that all will enjoy the king and kingdom. He knows that the blessedness of the kingdom is very much upon the one that rules so it was imperative that he be truly governed by God in life and expression. This being so, all would be well.

It becomes obvious that the psalm is really prophetic in content as it points to the real Lord who will appear and manifest such a reign. Jesus Christ fits the bill here because all the best qualities are introduced by reason of His rule in the hearts and lives of men. He came to commence a kingdom in peoples’ hearts and lives and to establish love, truth, goodness, righteousness, faith etc., in everyone of His willing subjects. Life is brought into a state of divine blessedness and it is not of a temporary nature or order.  As His Name endures forever, so does His kingdom!

How vital it is to know this King in order to be brought into His kingdom and live under His dynamic rule! He knows everyone of His loyal subjects and takes responsibility with regard to them in every detail and area of their lives. Under His gracious rule He bestows untold favours on all and each must see that they delight in Him and His goodness. Make sure that you truly know this King and are born into His kingdom. Having been birthed into it make certain, too, that you live as a worthy subject and experience the blessings of His personal reign in your life.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

Thought for the Day follows an instructive theme for everyday of the Week. We now turn our thoughts to another important factor if there is to be positive dealing with God. The word is ‘life’, a spiritual reality to be entered into if one is to know God to live a true life and extract the best from life

LIFE – THE GIFT OF ETERNAL LIFE – 1 John  5; 11,12

One cannot think an write about life without considering the factor, ‘eternal life’. This is what the gospel of Jesus Christ offers to those who believe on an receive Christ into their hearts an lives. Choice words from John the apostle: “And this is the record, that God had given to us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He that hath the Son hath life, an he that hath not the Son of God hath not life” -1 John 5: 11,12

What is meant by eternal life? Something more is intended than everlasting life, a life that goes no endlessly. It is not simply a case of existing forever and it has to do with the here an now life. Truly and really put, it means possessing, knowing and enjoying the luxury qualitative and quantitative life of God in this present world situation. It is receiving the very life of Go through Jesus Christ with all of its hallmarks of heavenly advantage an blessing. This is no second-rate stuff but the best that can be known and experienced.

The ‘eternal life’ was exemplified by no other than Jesus Christ. If ever a person was switched on to life it was Him. He was in dynamic touch with heaven and earth and was able to impact and influence all who He came across with life. He met death with life, disease and bodily affliction with life, hungry people He satisfied with the bread of life, etc. Ultimately He met death with life. The life of God and eternity flowed through Him. As you permit Him as sovereign in you so you will be switched on to the life of the eternal. And there is no substitute for such!

SACRED SONGS

The Song of the Soul Set Free

This is a wonderful hymn written by Rev Os. Smith, great pastor/evangelist of Toronto church, Canada.

Freedom is what every man and woman require in every section of their lives. It is no0t freedom to do what they like but freedom to what is right, best an most rewarding. Unfortunately, mankind is born with cursed nature and law of sin within his being which causes him to do evil. Only Christ can loose and liberate from such. He does it in a two-fold way. First, by dying an atoning death for sin, so dealing with the guilt factor and giving freedom from judgment. Second, through His incoming into life by His resurrection power He breaks the rule of sin and enables a person to act and behave in a most righteous manner. As the Bible says: ‘Whom the Son sets free, is free indeed’ – John 8:32

  1. Fairest of ten thousand is Jesus Christ, my Saviour,The Lily of the Valley, The Bright and Morning Star.
    He is all my glory, and in this heart of mine  Forevermore I’m singing a song of love divine.Refrain
    ‘Tis the song of the soul set free, And its melody is ringing.
    ‘Tis the song of the soul set free; Joy and peace to me it’s bringing.
    ‘Tis the song of the soul set free; And my heart is ever singing,
    Hallelujah! Hallelujah! The song of the soul set free!

    2/. Once my heart was burdened, but now I am forgiven, And with a song of gladness, I’m on my way to heav’n.
    Christ is my Redeemer; my Song of Songs is He. My Saviour, Lord, and Master–to Him my praise shall be – Refrain

    3/. When He came to save me, He set the joy-bells ringing,  And now I’m ever singing, For Christ has ransomed me. Once I lived in darkness; the light I could not see.
    But now I sing His praises, for He was set me free – refrain

    4/. Angels cannot sing it–this song of joy and freedom,  For mortals only know it, the ransomed and the free.
    Slaves were they in bondage and deepest misery; But now they sing triumphant their songs of liberty – refrain

QUOTES TO NOTE – love

Love is the only sane and satisfactory answer to the problem of human existence – Erich Fromm

DAILY MEDITATIONS

A NOBLE PRAYER – Psalm 71

Prayer was a constant feature throughout the whole of David’s life. In his later years he is found asking God for some desirable things. Now that he is reaching the latter part of his days he seeks God and particularly asks that the Lord will not set him aside or abandon him in any way. He knows that the thought and attitude of men can be to discard the older generation but he looks to the Lord that He will still befriend and bless him. Although he is old, grey and weakening, he wants the Lord to be a present factor and feature in his life and witness.

The thing that he does desire is to leave a noble legacy of testimony to God’s goodness to the up and coming generation – v18. He has a job to do for the Lord at this late time in life; it is to acquaint those who are to succeed him concerning the needful knowledge and experience of the Lord in their affairs. He had known so much of His miraculous workings that they must be passed on so that they could come to know the Lord in a meaningful manner.

Time hastens on for all and it is important to discover the relevance and worth of the Lord in all periods of existence. If you are older, then it is necessary for you to communicate with those around who are younger about God’s gracious and multiple dealings with you. Share out of the richness of your past the input the Lord has made in your life. If you are among the younger, make sure, at the earliest possible moment that you discover Him who is worth knowing from start to finish here on earth. You could have no one better than He sharing Himself with you.

LIFE – BLESSED PARTNERSHIPS THAT ENHANCE LIFE – Ecclesiastes  4:9-12; Luke 24:13-18

Life if it is to be truly enjoyed and experienced must know what it is to have real partnerships with other beings. Life was never meant to be a lonely and selfish business and existence. Other beings are absolutely essential for the outgoing, outliving and development and real success of mortality and immortality.

Partnership with God is crucial for the understanding and proper exploitation of one’s powers and potential. Real pleasure of the highest level can never be entered into and known without a dynamic link up with God, heaven and eternity. That is why Christ came, to establish a personal and powerful union and communion with God and the eternal world. Life originates and flourishes in and through Him.

Partnership with man and wife is a beautiful and beneficial exercise and ministry. Priscilla and Aquila, husband and wife, in the New Testament Church knew how to live and work together for the blessing of others and their own good. – Acts 16: 2, 3,4, 26; Romans 16:3,4.What an asset they turned out be!

It speaks in Psalm 133 about the blessing of brethren dwelling together in unity. When men join together as a brotherhood and team the potential is wonderful: Joshua and Caleb, David and Jonathan, Elijah and Elisha, Peter and John, Paul and Barnabas. Two men found one another’s company and fellowship helpful on the Emmaus road, and then Jesus joined the brotherhood – Luke 24. Make sure that life is filled with the right partnerships and you will know an expanding and expressive life!

SACRED SONGS

No More Veil God Bids me Enter

It is good and assuring to know that a true and living way and approach is now available to God through Christ and what He is and has done. He not only paid the penalty of our sin, He has now become our great High priest and introduces us into a dynamic accord and relationship with God the Father. He now welcomes us as His true offspring and is pleased to call us His children and family and prepare heaven and the eternal ages for us. Nothing could be better. We have every reason to be grateful and to praise the eternal Godhead!

Emma Bevan was the daughter of Philip Shuttleworth, warden ofNew College at Oxford, and later bishop of Chichester, England. In 1856, she married Robert Cooper Lee Bevan, of the Lombard Street banking firm that later became Barclays Bank Limited. She published several books translating German hymns into English.

“Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God … we have access by faith … and rejoice in hope of the glory of God … we glory in tribulations …” (Romans 5:1-5)

What a precious doctrine is the doctrine of Justification by faith alone in Christ alone, the distinctive Biblical doctrine re-discovered at the time of the Great and Glorious Reformation.  The true people of God wallow in its sublimity while the enemies of God and truth deplore its simplicity.  That a poor guilty sinner, moved by the Spirit of God, repenting of his sin and renouncing his self efforts, coming in desperation of soul to God for mercy in the name of His dearly beloved and only begotten Son, believing, trusting, and fully relying on His one, sufficient, substitutionary offering for sin at Calvary is saved for all eternity, is the most precious truth in the world!

What wonderful benefits and privileges flow from this justification.

FIRSTLY THERE IS PEACE WITH GOD
“We have peace with God”

Justification takes away the guilt of sin and so makes it possible for peace between the sinner and God.  Not only is enmity removed but friendship and fellowship with God then exists and the poor sin-sick soul comes to peace in its fullest dimension.

SECONDLY THERE IS ACCESS TO GOD
“We have access by faith”

We who by nature are the wretched sons of want, once justified by faith, have access to God’s inexhaustible reservoirs of grace and immeasurable oceans of mercy. By the path of prayer, with the eye of faith, we enter the unseen realms.  We draw nigh to God’s  great throne of mercy and of grace.

1/. No more veil!  God bids me enter, By the new and living way.
Not in trembling hope I venture, Boldly I His call obey:
There with Him, my God I meet, God upon the mercy seat!

2/. In the robes of spotless whiteness, With the blood of priceless worth,
He has gone into that brightness, Christ rejected from the earth –
Christ accepted there on high, And in Him do I draw nigh.

3/. Oh, the welcome I have found there, God in all His love made known!
Oh, the glories that surround there, Those accepted in His Son!
Who can tell the depths of bliss, Spoken by the Father’s kiss?

4/. One with Him, O Lord, before Thee, There I live, and yet not I;
Christ it is who there adores Thee; Who more dear, or  who more nigh?
All the Father’s heart mine own –  Mine – and yet His Son’s alone.

5. All the worth I have before Him,  is the value of the Blood;
I present when I adore Him,  Christ the first-fruits unto God ;
Him with joy doth God behold, Thus is my acceptance told.

DAILY MEDITATIONS

UNDER PRESSURE – Psalm 70

What is related here in this brief psalm is found in the last five verses of Psalm 40. It must have been an issue that had not gone away or hadn’t been answered or that it was a matter that was repeating itself. At least the writer knew what to do when other people were putting him through the mill. There were those who sought to blame and shame him and bring him to a state of disgrace before others. They really wanted to hurt him and make things difficult. He was only human and felt the keenness of their insults and attack. It had reached a climatic stage.

May those who love your salvation repeatedly shout, ‘God is great’” – v4 (New Living Translation).

FURTHER NOTES ON THE MINOR PROPHETS

(27)

THE COMING RULER

Micah 5

This is one of the most amazing prophecies given to Micah that focuses attention on Israel’s Messiah, Jesus Christ. In the midst of all the difficulties and heartaches he was witnessing, Micah, receives a word of foreknowledge as to what is going to occur with regard the appearance of a unique personality. This extraordinary person to emerge would leave His mark permanently in history and affect the blessedness of Israel in a remarkable manner. There was going to appear an individual who would become renowned and manifest so much good.

1/.THIS ONE WOULD BRING GREAT SIGNIFICANCE TO A PLACE – v 2

Bethlehem, a little town of lowly status would become a venue of great note because of this individual being born there. This place had gained some publicity through David, Israel’s, former monarch, but the birth of Jesus Christ there would give it incredible prominence.  The prophecy was to be later fulfilled and it is recorded in its accomplishment in Matthew 2.

2/. THIS ONE HAS AN ETERNAL EXISTENCE – v2

A simple yet profound statement is made re-this one – “Yet a ruler will come from you, one whose origins are from the distant past.” This certainly is a unique declaration that makes it clear that Jesus Christ did not begin His existence on earth. It voices and accents the eternal and pre-incarnate position of Christ. The one who came had no beginnings and came as man can judged from the eternal past.

3/. THIS ONE WILL GIVE TRUE LEADERSHIP TO GOD’S PEOPLE – v4

He has always had His eyes and interest on Israel. What has been in mind and view was to take ultimate control and give absolute and perfect leadership to this people at the end of the day.  This will be more than natural direction and government, it will be utterly divine and conducted with heavenly authority.

4/. THIS ONE WILL BE HIGHLY HONOURED – v4

What he will achieve will not only benefit and bless Israel, one nation, the whole world will profit from Him and He will be highly exalted by all. Time and history has proven and witnessed the birth not only of Christ but Christianity and it is yet to see a greater display of His sovereign grace and rule.

5/. THIS ONE WILL CREATE A STATE OF PEACE – v5

Another blessed title of this coming ruler is ‘Prince of Peace.’  Through His first advent He has brought into being peace for all men between God and Man through His vicarious and victorious work on the Cross. When He comes again, in all of His regal and legal power, He will initiate an order of peace the world over. Spiritual and natural peace come from Him alone through His Kingship and rule.

LIFE – PRESERVED TO LIVE – Exodus 12

The LORD was able to look after this people as they were slaves in the land of Egypt. For many years they suffered at the hands of their enemies and knew what it to merely to eke out an existence. It could be said, that as a people they did not truly live. It was a painful and sad time and there looked to be no way out for them. All that life consisted for them was appeasing their masters. Life was cruel and a shame and they needed both freedom and life. Through Moses an answer was to come.

The first thing the LORD had to do was to save them from the death angel that visited Egypt. He provided sacred covering through the blood of a slain lamb as it was placed on the doorposts and lintels of their homes. But He did more! He delivered them from the tyrannical rule so that they could move out into a new atmosphere of hope, possibility and a great future. He was to give them something to really live and go for. The wilderness journey was but a passing through stage into the Promised Land of Life and Blessing.

So Christ has done infinitely more for you. Having saved and secured you from eternal death and damnation, a brand new life and future is held open for you. Instead of languishing in death you have the prospect of living in and through God, enjoying His Fatherhood, Christ’s Saviourhood and Lordship and the Holy Spirit’s daily inspiration and input. You are out of a drab existence and now can live and enjoy life in its fullness. Do not miss out today on your inheritance.

SACRED SONGS

Come, Brethren Dear, that Know the Lord

What a glorious hymn that was sung by the Methodist Primitives. One can just imagine them being so marvellously inspired and singing the words with immense faith and gusto! How they loved to sing out their convictions! These verses proclaim the tremendous hope that one day all the saints will be gathered home as one and what rejoicing there will be. As Christ is revealed, in all of His majesty, before the household of God to be acclaimed for who He is and what He has done. One must make certain that one will be present to experience such a fabulous occasion! See you there!

Come, brethren dear, that know the Lord, Who taste the sweets of Jesus’ word,

In Jesus’ ways go on; Our poverty and trials here,Will only make us richer there, When we arrive at home (repeat last line).

2/. We feel that heaven is now begun, It issues from the eternal throne,

From Jesus’ throne on high; It comes in floods we can’t contain,

We drink, and drink, and drink again, And yet we still are dry (Repeat last line)

3/.But when to that bright world we come And all surround the glorious throne, We’ll drink a full supply;

Jesus will lead the ransomed forthTo living streams of riches worthy, That never will run dry.

4/. O then we’ll shine, and shout and sing, And make the heavenly portal rings,

When all the saints get home; Come on, come on my brethren dear,

We soon shall meet together there, For Jesus bids you come.

5/. Amen! Amen! My soul replies, I’m bound tom meet Him in the skies,

And claim a mansion there; Now here’s my heart, and here’s my hand,

To meet you in the heavenly land, Where we shall part no more.

DAILY MEDITATIONS

IN DEEP TROUBLE – Psalm 69

This is what the psalmist admits to being in and most of his words reflect this factor. In v17 according to the New Living translation he says, “For I am in deep trouble’. He gives evidence at the outset by stating that the floodwaters are up to his neck. This alone indicates the severity of his situation. But then he speaks of sinking in mire with no sure foothold to rest on. He mentions that he is utterly exhausted and later mentions that there is not one person to show any pity or concern. Everyone and everything seems against him. Things could not be worse.

He does at least have the Lord to resort to in a situation of this nature. At least he knows he can turn to the One that will listen to his plea and work on his behalf. In v13 he reveals that there is a persistency in prayer in spite of the deep trouble he is in. He remarks, “But I keep praying to you, LORD, hoping this is the time you will show me favour.” He is hanging in there although everything is in a real, problematic condition. At the end of the day he wants to be divinely rescued so that he can sing the praises of the LORD – vv29-33. He believes there will be divine intervention.

As you read these words you may sense you are in deep trouble, almost at drowning point or sinking in a miry pit with no one to care or rescue. Maybe you have giving up hope that there can be or come an answer. From a human angle there is no solution. Real faith and prayer in and to God can still turn the whole situation around. Do not quit but persist in bringing and handing yourself and the matter to the LORD and see what He can and will do. He will hear and answer you in a way that will honour Him and benefit
