Thought for the Day follows an instructive theme for everyday of the Week. We now turn our thoughts to another important factor if there is to be positive dealing with God. The word is ‘consecrate’, a spiritual reality to be entered into if one is to know God to live a true life and extract the best from life. One of the vital and glorious considerations of life is the knowledge that you are demonstrating a genuine commitment to Christ which is real and fulfilling.

The writer to the Hebrews made the point that the words use by the psalmist are a direct reference to Christ in His personal commitment to the Father and mankind in the great work of salvation and regeneration. Before He came to earth, He was fully consecrated and His advent and ministry is just a powerful proof of this. It was His supreme joy to be able to serve the Godhead in such a capacity. Never has there been a person who has shown incredible devotion to such an eternal cause. Whilst here in service He revealed the heart-beat of His being – “I always do those things that please the Father” – John 8:29.

It was a very demanding role that He was called upon to carry out but He did it with utmost consecration. The lonely course He had to tread, the work-load was enormous, and then the ultimate requirement called for in His sacrificial death which was most excruciating, but He carried all through with inward pleasure. He knew He was serving the best and accomplishing the best and so it required Him to be at His best and render a peak performance.

Christians are called not simply to believe in Christ but to follow His example, to copy Him in everything. In the light of what He has done so He must be copied. Paul made this appeal to the early Christians in the church at Rome: “I beseech you, therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God (in the light of the Cross), that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service” – Romans 12:1. If Christ could and did give himself freely and fully on the Cross for you, then the response is to be similar. You need to delight in giving yourself to Him in gladsome surrender and service. Let there be no holding back – I surrender all!

I Want Dear Lord

Alfred B. Smith Al Smith 1916-2001 Often called the dean of Gospel music, Dr. Al Smith, was a composer, Gospel soloist, song leader, lecturer, and an authority on church music, recording artist and music publisher. You may have seen or heard him on national radio or television, met him in a little white New England church where he was giving a concert, found him lecturing in a classroom to a group of college students, or leading a great audience of some 20,000 in singing at a conference in Knoxville, Tennessee. Wherever you may have found Dr. Smith, you were sure to find a man who enjoyed the work God called him to do.

1/. I want, dear Lord, a heart that’s true and clean, A sunlit heart, with not a cloud between;
A heart like thine, a heart divine, A heart as white as snow;
On me, dear Lord, a heart like this bestow.

2/. I want, dear Lord, a love that cares for all, A deep, strong love that answers every call;
A love like thine, a love divine, A love to come or go;
On me, dear Lord, a love like this bestow.

3/. I want, dear Lord, a soul on fire for thee, A soul baptized with heavenly energy;
A willing mind, a ready hand To do whate’er I know,
To spread thy light wherever I may go.

Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself – George Bernard Shaw

There are always great prospects when God is manifesting His grace and favour. The psalm opens up with the fact that God has already been favourable to His people in that He has restored their fortunes and granted them the blessing of forgiveness. Any divine anger that had existed was over so the possibility was there for the experience of untold prospects for good. From God’s view it was now opportune for things to move ahead into a fresh period of relationship, growth and abundance. There is a desire for a glorious revival of His people so that they will enter into a bigger phase of freedom, fulfilment and delight.

What should be seen in the revelation of the unfolding prospects is the unfailing love of the Lord – v7 “Show us your unfailing love, O Lord.” The great characteristics to be enjoyed are that of righteousness, peace, prosperity and every kind of blessing. As God restores, an era of blessedness and happiness that will cause all to rejoice will be experienced. God positively coming through for them will mean an enriched and abundant life. They have everything to look forward as God brings about these changes in them and their situation.

Ever realize that it is the Lord’s desire to fill your life and future days with great prospects. As you seek the Lord’s favour, and endeavour to live in it, then be sure of His love and goodness being manifested. As you turn to Him in reverential fear and faith, He will turn to you in favour and fulness and so enlarge your being and borders. Your whole future can be changed from this day forward as you allow Him to assume total control and permit Him to be the director and blesser always. There is no limit as far as God is concerned as to what can be wrought.
