WELCOME TO THIS CHRISTIAN WEBSITE

PEACE– the Experience of Real PeaceThe psalm presents things in a seeming traumatic condition and in great uproar all round creating immense unrest in those in those in the midst of such. There looks to be upheaval and confusion. Noting appears to be stable or settled and all is confusion. It speaks of the Earth moving, mountains shaking, waters roaring, swelling and in tumult, nations raging and kingdoms tottering. All looks to be crumbling and in a state of chaos. It is a picture of utter helplessness and hopelessness. It seems like  a witness of the days we are living in.
It is noticeable that the psalmist opens with an assured statement – “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble” – v1. Although everything and everyone is in alarming condition. He is not alarmed or unduly disturbed. He sits enthroned and calm amidst the most frightening conditions. He is over and above and is absolute charge and control.
He then utters this possibility and assurance to those who will look to Him and trust. This promise is offered to be experienced – “Be still and know that I am God” – v10. He extends His calm and balance to those who will allow Him access into their beings. The alarm ceases and peace prevails and supremely rules.

Thou Hidden Source of Calm Repose

This is a hymn with words that as you sing them appear to minister immediately to the mind and heart. That is how I have found it to be. Thank God for a God who is undisturbed by all He manages and administers and He is well able to impart the same to those who love, trust and believe to receive of His nature.

Charles Wesley expresses a deep and personal faith. The poetry is a testimony of his faith that he affirmed to the world. These words may reflect difficulties and trials that the Wesley brothers faced as they traveled to the developing Methodist societies and preached in hostile environments.

As a poet with deep theological understanding, Wesley incorporated his poetic skill into his theological thought through his hymns. The use of paradox in this hymn resonates with Christian joy in thanksgiving in any circumstances. Stanza four, for example, concludes the hymn with a tour de force of successive paradoxes:

The key word in the first stanza is “repose,” or “rest.” The idea of this “rest” may be a reference to Matthew 11:28-30, “Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.” As people come to God with their different burdens and problems, Jesus extends the invitation to come to him for respite and relief.

1/. Thou hidden source of calm repose, Thou all-sufficient love divine;
My help and refuge from my foes, Secure I am, if Thou art mine;
From sin and grief, from guilt and shame, I hide me, Jesus, in Thy name.

2/. Thy mighty name salvation is, And keeps my happy soul above;
Comfort it brings, and power and peace, And joy and everlasting love;
To me with Thy dear name are given Pardon and holiness and Heaven.

3/. Jesus, my All in all Thou art, My rest in toil, mine ease in pain;
The med’cine of my broken heart; In war, my peace; in loss, my gain;
My smile beneath the tyrant’s frown; In shame, my glory and my crown.

3/. In weakness, mine almighty power; In bonds, my perfect liberty;

My light in Satan’s darkest hour; In grief, my joy unspeakable;
My life in death; my Lord, my all.

DAILY MEDITATIONS

A CHOICE SITUATION – Psalm 65

What is stated in v4 marks out a choice situation for a select person – “Blessed is the man whom You choose and cause to approach unto You, that he may dwell in Your courts . . .”.  It expresses a position and experience of divine favour. To be approved of God is no mean thing but an honoured and valued factor that has many benefits associated with it. How essential it is to have a good standing with God, where it is possible to appear in His presence with boldness and have His attention and affection! The psalmist would consider it to be the most beneficial situation of life.

Divine blessing is on the man and divine blessings will be afforded in every way to the one who obtains this favour. It states that such will be “satisfied with the goodness of Your house.” One could not be better placed, to receive the maximum that God would confer upon life. The word ‘blessed’ means to be done good to and those who know a close and acceptable relationship with God are sure to enjoy the abundance of His goodness. The early patriarchs knew what it was to be loaded on every front with the tokens of His grace. He pours blessings from on high so that there is not enough room to contain His gifts.

Make this the main pursuit of your life: to gain the favour of the Lord so that you can readily enter into His courts and draw nigh to discover the wealth of intimacy. To be able to come before and know Him in reality is the choicest experience of life. He chooses you as you choose that which is pure, true, holy and wholesome. In going for that which is of a godly nature you will discover that He will both receive and endow you will all that is profitable and pleasurable. God is not seeking to spoil your existence now but to enrich it with His presence and providence.
