THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

Thought for the Day follows an instructive theme for everyday of the Week. We now turn our thoughts to another important factor if there is to be positive dealing with God. The word is ‘assurance’ a spiritual reality to be entered into if one is to know God to live a true life and extract the best from God. In coming to know Go through His Word, Spirit and Jesus Christ, the min an heart is to be possessed with sure knowledge of truth an things that matter. Doubt and uncertainty is removed as the blessing of heavenly convictions move in an take over life.

ASSURANCE – ASSURED IN THE MIDST OF SEVERE TRIALS – Genesis 39

It was one thing to have great dreams respecting one’s future, quite another to know the very tough route lined up secure the same. Joseph was quite overwhelmed as a youth over the dreams that God gave concerning his life an ultimate destiny. That was somewhat veiled from him. Little did he know that getting to the top and becoming a fulfilled individual would prove most costly and demanding. In the midst of it he could have fallen apart but somehow a firm assurance was in him that stabilized in the questionable situations.

Arriving as a slave in Egypt he must have thought it was strange path to take to success. But he applied himself wisely and the time came when he was head steward. But then he finds himself in prison for doing the right, moral thing. Resisting temptation he experiences the loss of his position an liberty. Maybe he sensed he was fortunate to keep his life! There was encouragement even in these conditions. He more or less runs the prison for the chief guard. Then the disappointment of being forgotten by the chief butler after serving him well.

But he maintained his assurance and at the right moment in the workings of the Lord he is brought out to serve a tremendous situation. He becomes Prime Minister overnight and enters with revelation to save the day and generation. All would be grateful for his faith, knowledge and expertise in directing the next years for good. He knew God had brought him there and would sustain him. You have been brought to the kingdom for such a time as this. Although you may be severely tried, remember, it is the way in which you are developed by God for a worthy position and ministry. He will not fail, and neither will you. Be assured an apply yourself with spiritual diligence and fortitude.

SACRED SONGS

The Name of Jesus I so Sweet

This is a lovely song that has brought tremendous comfort an consolation to may saints throughout the years. The simple but sure mention of His Name does seemingly work spiritual and natural wonders. He responds to His Name and works dynamically in an for those who trust its authority.

Martin was pastor of the Grace Baptist Church (formerly Cramer’s Hill), Camden, New Jersey (1891-4); Noank Baptist Church, Noank, Connecticut (1894-1900); Grace Baptist Church, Somerville, Massachusetts (near Boston; at the time of his arrival there it was noted he was from “Bluffton, Indiana”); and the First Baptist Church in Ft. Myers, Florida, from 1912 until his death

1/. The name of Jesus is so sweet, I love its music to repeat;
It makes my joys full and complete,  The precious name of Jesus.

Refrain
Jesus! oh, how sweet the name, Jesus! every day the same;
Jesus! let all saints proclaim  Its worthy praise forever.

2/. I love the name of Him whose heart Knows all my griefs and bears a part;
Who bids all anxious fears depart,   I love the name of Jesus – Refrain

3/. That name I fondly love to hear, It never fails my heart to cheer,
Its music dries the falling tear; Exalt the name of Jesus – Refrain

4/.No word of man can ever tell How sweet the name I love so well,
Oh, let its praises ever swell, Oh, praise the name of Jesus. – Refrain

DAILY MEDITATIONS

UNTOLD AFFLICTION AND MISERY – Psalm 88

Apart from the opening phrase one pleasant expression does not appear within the words of the psalmist. He commences with the words: “O LORD, God of my salvation” – v1 and then proceeds down the line of unveiling his untold experience of suffering, pain and woe. It is possibly one of the saddest psalms composed. He really must have been going through a valley of darkness with hardly any light in the tunnel. Everything and everyone was set against him. Nothing was going right and no one seemed bothered, not even the Lord! He found it to be a very demanding and trying ordeal. The circumstances he found himself in made him feel trapped.

At least he could unburden his thoughts and feelings to the Lord. He sensed that the only way out of the mess was the Lord, hence the prayer. Whilst this evil and predicament existed the only relief he could find was making his whole condition known to the One that could bring supernatural help. Although it may look as if he was forgotten and abandoned by God, yet he knew deep within his spirit that God was truly aware of his plight. There was some slight token of faith even though all was black and lacking in any positive prospect. He would stand through prayer.

There are occasions when all seems to go wrong and there is no immediate answer to prayer. Afflictions do take their toll upon us. They can create the idea that God has abandoned us. It is easy to sink into hopelessness and despair. If you are at that point you need to hold on to God in prayer until you see His miraculous intervention. There is no hopeless situation that He cannot resolve.

FURTHER NOTES ON THE MINOR PROPHETS

AN AWESOME GOD

NAHUM 1

The special messenger of the Lord, Nahum, portrays God as awesome. His descriptive speech in vv2-6 reveals what a great, illustrious and powerful God He is. No one should underestimate His person, presence, attributes, abilities and glory. He appears majestic and He is to be reverenced and given due respect. In this section He makes known so many things and as they are seen and assessed together make known the wonder of Israel’s God, the Almighty.

1/. HE IS ABLE TO DEAL WITH ALL OPPOSITIONS – vv2,12,13

God is not overwhelmed or intimidated by the strength and number of the opposition. It does not matter what the size of it is. He can and does reduce it to utter impotence and desolation. There is no one that can stand against Him and have any hope of success. This is a comfort to those who have Him as God in life but a real threat and fear to others that defy Him.

2/. HE IS ABLE TO MANIFEST HIS SOVEREIGN POWER – v3

The prophet affirms that ‘His power is great.’ There is no limit to what He can do. It can be measured against every contingency and emergency and is never found wanting. His power is equal to any demand at anytime. Infinite and all power belong to Him as the prophet Isaiah reveals in chapter 40. He not only has the ability to create in an infinite manner, He is able to sustain all that he has created. He does not have to wax strong and neither does His power wane. It is a consistent factor and He shows it in awesome manner.

3/. HE IS ABLE ADMINISTER JUSTICE –v3

The point is made that ‘He never lets the guilty go unpunished.’ This reveals Him as the perfect Judge and that He possesses understanding in relation to all of His creatures and observes their conduct. No one can pursue a course of evil and get away with it. He brings to account and if one is found guilty then He will take the right measures to deal with such. How awesome is this fact!

4/. HE IS ABLE TO COMMAND AND CONTROL NATURE vv3-6

All of creation without is subject to His law of command and responds to His presence and decrees. The whirlwind and storm, oceans and rivers, forests, hills and mountains stand in awe of Him and acknowledge His majesty and authority.

CONCLUSION

The prophet assures that this is an excellent factor to consider because it is a blessing to those who have placed their pure faith and trust in Him -vv7, 8. This awesome God becomes a strong refuge and cover for those who love, know and serve Him. They do not have the wrong kind of fear that produces terror but the divine fear that produces trust and security.

ASSURANCE – Being Assured that God has Spoken – Genesis 12:1-4

As Abraham began his journey and a long-life relationship with God, it was very late in life. He encountered God and in a choice manner and from thence he needed to be absolutely sure of Him and His directives for the future . He could not afford to make any mistakes in this area. He must not assume or presume in this because his destiny depended upon its reality. The things that were to be called for were of an extreme order and he must not become a fool before others. No doubt he must have pondered much upon what was uttered within his being before stepping out.

God told him to leave the place of seeming security and embark on a mission that appeared crazy. He said He would reveal to him as he left all an go to the place where he wanted him to settle and make of him a great nation and immortalise his name. He would bless him beyond measure as he stepped out trusting Him and His word. Abraham was to discover that taking God at His word would not be an easy option. Later there would be the call to sacrifice his beloved in whom all his joys and hopes were pinned. Certainly, he wasn’t to follow any wild imagination. But he was absolutely assured in his spirit that he heard aright and would prove God did have a programme for his life. He was not to be disappointed.

It is imperative that you cultivate a listening ear to God if you are to know and be able to accomplish something of worth with your life. One thing you can be assured of, He does want to speak and drop His divine revelation in and upon your life. It will be so if you are truly prepared to give time to Him to do so. Don’t let people and things hinder you but ascertain His voice and word so you can move into a meaningful and lasting work, ministry and service that will be eternally rewarding. You cannot afford to miss out on a life of assurance in what has been marked out for you by Him.

SACRED SONGS
The Trusting Heart to Jesus Clings

When you manifest that wonderful trust in Lord it is somewhat connected with song. It is true, Jesus gives you someone and something worth singing about. As you sing it has a growing impact an infusion to faith. He draws near as you sing to Him and sing of Him.

The author was, Eliza E. Hewitt and she had a pseudonym: Lidie H. Edmunds. Eliza Edmunds Hewitt was born in Philadelphia 28 June 1851. She was educated in the public schools and after graduation from high school became a teacher. However, she developed a spinal malady which cut short her career and made her a shut-in for many years. During her convalescence, she studied English literature. She felt a need to be useful to her church and began writing poems for the primary department. she went on to teach Sunday school, take an active part in the Philadelphia Elementary Union and become Superintendent of the primary department of Calvin Presbyterian Church.

1/. The trusting heart to Jesus clings, Nor any ill forebodes,
But at the cross of Calv’ry, sings, Praise God for lifted loads!

Refrain:
Singing I go along life’s road, Praising the Lord, praising the Lord,
Singing I go along life’s road, For Jesus has lifted my load.

2/. The passing days bring many cares, “Fear not,” I hear Him say,
And when my fears are turned to prayers, The burdens slip away.

3/. He tells me of my Father’s love, And never slumb’ring eye,
My everlasting King above Will all my needs supply.

4/. When to the throne of grace I flee, I find the promise true,
The mighty arms upholding me Will bear my burdens too.

DAILY MEDITATIONS
THE BLESSED CITY – Psalm 87

The city of Jerusalem is highlighted, the place that God has honoured and made a place of renown. It is recorded that He founded the Holy Metropolis and loves it in an extraordinary way. Jerusalem became the venue where David honoured the Lord by bringing the Ark of the Covenant and extravagantly preparing for the Holy Sanctuary to be built there. After Solomon had built the Temple God came and owned it in a supernatural manner. So the city became a very blessed location because the Blessed One came to take up residence there.

The city became a venue of residence for its kings and for glorious occasions of celebrations. No wonder those born there sensed a special privilege. The sacred place became the spot on earth where major things took place and above all, where Israel’s Messiah was manifested and where the Saviour of the world was crucified. It was outside its wall where He obtained the salvation for all mankind. He makes it possible to be born again. Through Him we become the heavenly Jerusalem of which the earthly one is but a type – see Revelation 21.

The Christian believer has an advantage over a person born in the city of Jerusalem. They will share in the home and delights of the unique metropolis of heaven with all of its grandeur and glory, in the presence of the King of kings, Jesus Christ. It is the blessed city above all and is altogether different and unique. God is really to be seen and known in her and all those who have a place there are sure to be blessed by Him on an unbelievable scale – 1 Corinthians 2: 9. It is imperative that you become one of its citizens through faith in Christ alone.

One of the great purpose of the Scriptures is to create and cultivate real assurance in the hearts and minds of those who relate to himself. If you are to have any positive an worthwhile relationship and dealings with Him then it is on the basis of true assurance. This is not something that you beget and build up in yourself as a result of positive thinking. It is not something of a natural acquisition but a condition of being produced by God within a person that makes them a quality believer. Even when things exist around of a negative and destructive character, they have a unique calmness an confidence wrought by a spiritual assurance..

Moses possessed it as a leader after he had met with God and was called to be Israel’s deliverer. The task assigned to him was impossible for him to perform and he needed to know God was with him to bring this about. As he appears before Pharaoh, the Israelites, the Red Sea, etc., he certainly was in need of some unique boldness an assurance. It was God who needed to be alongside to inspire an create in him this wonderful virtue. This 80 year old turned out to be one of the most outstanding leaders of all time that even Winston Churchill admired.

As you are called to a formidable assignment, do not wither or wilt at it. The important thing is to know for sure that God has personally summoned you to act on His behalf and He will stand by to assist in bringing to realisation. Yonggie Chow once stood outside Albert Hall in London not long after he had entered the Christian ministry and the Lord revealed to him that he was called to build something similar in Seoul. What a premise he saw erected for God’s glory and the promotion of the Gospel of Christ! The assurance preceded everything. So the Lord would birth such an assurance in you which is but the precedent for a big job an accomplishment

SACRED SONGS
What Though Clouds are Hovering O’er Me

This is an old favourite of mine, one that I learned soon after I was saved. To know Christ in, with and for you in life is an immense blessing. But as the song puts it: it is not just a case of heaven on earth, the best is yet to be. The great thing is His abiding presence and input on a daily basis. Enjoy the words again and refresh your memory an experience!

1/.What though clouds are hovering o’er me. And I seem to walk alone,
Longing ‘mid my care and crosses, For the joys that are now are flown,
If I’ve Jesus, ‘Jesus only,’ Then my sky will have a gem,
He’s the Sun of brightest splendour, And the Star of Bethlehem.

2/. What though my all earthly journey Bringeth naught but weary hours,
An in grasping for life’s roses, Thorns I find instead of flowers,
If I’ve Jesus, ‘Jesus only,’ I possess a cluster rare,
He’s the Gem of precious jewels an the Rose of Sharon fair.

3/. What tho’ all my heart is yearning For the lov’d of long ago,
Bitter lessons sadly learning From the shadowy page of woe,
If I’ve Jesus, ‘Jesus only,’ He’ll be with me to the end;
An, unseen by mortal vision, Angel bands will o’er me bend.

4/. When I soar to realms of glory, An an entrance I await,
If I whisper ‘Jesus only,’ Wide will ope te pearly gate
When I join the heavenly chorus An the angel hosts I see,
Precious Jesus, ‘ Jesus only,’ Will my song of rapture be.

DAILY MEDITATIONS
A PERCEPTIVE PUPIL Psalm 86

David was a keen and perceptive pupil from his earliest years. He discovered in both the formative years of his life and the remainder who the best Teacher was. The Lord was the One who became his instructor because he perceived God had the most invaluable lessons to teach. In v11 he says: “Teach me your ways, O Lord.” This shows that he knew that he needed to know from the greatest and wisest source of all the finest way to live and produce a worthwhile character and do a great work. He could do no better than come to the fount of wisdom and find out all he needed to know and have the answers that mattered.

He could neither trust himself or others to give him the guidance that he so desperately required. Men were subject to making serious mistakes and errors that could prove disastrous. Not so the Lord: His knowledge, judgment and wisdom were perfect, absolute, true and could be fully relied upon. He had perceived that when he followed out His instructions and directions he found out they yielded the maximum good. There was no other that could serve Him to highest advantage.

We are all in life’s schoolroom and the Lord wills to be our Teacher in everything. He is most capable because He is omniscient, which means He possesses infinite, perfect and absolute knowledge. You need to learn as quickly as possible that the Lord desires to be your principal Mentor and that throughout life He has lessons of the greatest order to impart into your mind, heart and experience. Wise people turn and listen to what He always has to say thus they are richly and eternally benefited. Seek His direction today and discover He has things to teach you of worth.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

Thought for the Day follows an instructive theme for everyday of the Week. We now turn our thoughts to another important factor if there is to be positive dealing with God. The word is ‘consecrate’, a spiritual reality to be entered into if one is to know God to live a true life and extract the best from life. One of the vital and glorious considerations of life is the knowledge that you are demonstrating a genuine commitment to Christ which is real and fulfilling.

CONSECRATE – THE GREATEST EXAMPLE OF CONSECRATION – Psalm 40:6-8; Hebrew 10: 5-10

The writer to the Hebrews made the point that the words use by the psalmist are a direct reference to Christ in His personal commitment to the Father and mankind in the great work of salvation and regeneration. Before He came to earth, He was fully consecrated and His advent and ministry is just a powerful proof of this. It was His supreme joy to be able to serve the Godhead in such a capacity. Never has there been a person who has shown incredible devotion to such an eternal cause. Whilst here in service He revealed the heart-beat of His being – “I always do those things that please the Father” – John 8:29.

It was a very demanding role that He was called upon to carry out but He did it with utmost consecration. The lonely course He had to tread, the work-load was enormous, and then the ultimate requirement called for in His sacrificial death which was most excruciating, but He carried all through with inward pleasure. He knew He was serving the best and accomplishing the best and so it required Him to be at His best and render a peak performance.

Christians are called not simply to believe in Christ but to follow His example, to copy Him in everything. In the light of what He has done so He must be copied. Paul made this appeal to the early Christians in the church at Rome: “I beseech you, therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God (in the light of the Cross), that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service” – Romans 12:1. If Christ could and did give himself freely and fully on the Cross for you, then the response is to be similar. You need to delight in giving yourself to Him in gladsome surrender and service. Let there be no holding back – I surrender all!

SACRED SONGS
I Want Dear Lord

Alfred B. Smith Al Smith 1916-2001 Often called the dean of Gospel music, Dr. Al Smith, was a composer, Gospel soloist, song leader, lecturer, and an authority on church music, recording artist and music publisher. You may have seen or heard him on national radio or television, met him in a little white New England church where he was giving a concert, found him lecturing in a classroom to a group of college students, or leading a great audience of some 20,000 in singing at a conference in Knoxville, Tennessee. Wherever you may have found Dr. Smith, you were sure to find a man who enjoyed the work God called him to do.

1/. I want, dear Lord, a heart that’s true and clean, A sunlit heart, with not a cloud between;
A heart like thine, a heart divine, A heart as white as snow;
On me, dear Lord, a heart like this bestow.

2/. I want, dear Lord, a love that cares for all, A deep, strong love that answers every call;
A love like thine, a love divine, A love to come or go;
On me, dear Lord, a love like this bestow.

3/. I want, dear Lord, a soul on fire for thee, A soul baptized with heavenly energy;
A willing mind, a ready hand To do whate’er I know,
To spread thy light wherever I may go.

QUOTES TO NOTE – life

Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself – George Bernard Shaw

DAILY MEDITATIONS
GREAT PROSPECTS – Psalm 85

There are always great prospects when God is manifesting His grace and favour. The psalm opens up with the fact that God has already been favourable to His people in that He has restored their fortunes and granted them the blessing of forgiveness. Any divine anger that had existed was over so the possibility was there for the experience of untold prospects for good. From God’s view it was now opportune for things to move ahead into a fresh period of relationship, growth and abundance. There is a desire for a glorious revival of His people so that they will enter into a bigger phase of freedom, fulfilment and delight.

What should be seen in the revelation of the unfolding prospects is the unfailing love of the Lord – v7 “Show us your unfailing love, O Lord.” The great characteristics to be enjoyed are that of righteousness, peace, prosperity and every kind of blessing. As God restores, an era of blessedness and happiness that will cause all to rejoice will be experienced. God positively coming through for them will mean an enriched and abundant life. They have everything to look forward as God brings about these changes in them and their situation.

Ever realize that it is the Lord’s desire to fill your life and future days with great prospects. As you seek the Lord’s favour, and endeavour to live in it, then be sure of His love and goodness being manifested. As you turn to Him in reverential fear and faith, He will turn to you in favour and fulness and so enlarge your being and borders. Your whole future can be changed from this day forward as you allow Him to assume total control and permit Him to be the director and blesser always. There is no limit as far as God is concerned as to what can be wrought.

CONSECRATE – In Being in a Divine Team – 1 Kings 18;16-21

It would seem that there is revealed in the Scriptures that the Lord desires people who can work together as a team in His interests an purposes, where people are set apart to and for God and each other for His glory an each other’s good. For the partnership to be successful requires each one to be wholly committed an devoted continually. It was to each other’s advantage and progress when relations were harmonious and selfless.

Aaron was require to link up with his brother Moses and nerve him in a major enterprise. Joshua had a Caleb who was courageously committed with him to see the ultimate goal realised for Israel. Elijah was called upon to summon a young Elisha an involve him in sacred calling. He was ready and immediately responsive to the summons. There was to be no half-measures with him as he instantly dedicated himself to the Lord an His servant and serve in an honourable manner an with distinction.

It may be the Lord desires you to be joined in mission an ministry with some person or people. The call of heaven is in an on you to join spiritual forces so that much more can be wrought. The Lord in His commissioning sent His disciples out in pairs. There was a heavenly wisdom in this. Perhaps the time is now for you to be effectually linked with someone in prayer, evangelism, caring so that a greater task force I created and a bigger work done.

SACRED SONGS
When the Roll is Called up Yonder

This was really a favourite in early Pentecostal days, especially in times of Convention an Conference. How the saints were filled with rapture an enthusiasm at the prospect of Christ’ return! There I certainly a need for a fresh emphasis with regard to it today in the evidence of the signs of the times. Christ’s coming is imminent and so the call to be on the tip-toe of expectancy for His arrival.

Words & Music: James Black, a Methodist Sunday school teacher in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, was calling roll one day for a youth meeting. Young Bessie, daughter of a drunkard, did not show up, and he was disappointed at her failure to appear. Black made a comment to the effect, “Well, I trust when the roll is called up yonder, she’ll be there.” He tried to respond with an appropriate song, but could not find one in his song book:

This lack of a fitting song caused me both sorrow and disappointment. An inner voice seemed to say, “Why don’t you write one?” I put away the thought. As I opened the gate on my way home, the same thought came again so strongly that tears filled my eyes. I entered the house and sat down at the piano. The words came to me effortlessly…The tune came the same way—I dared not change a single note or word.

1/. When the trumpet of the Lord shall sound, and time shall be no more,

When the saved of earth shall gather over on the other shore,
And the roll is called up yonder, I’ll be there.

Refrain
When the roll is called up yonder (repeat 3 x)
When the roll is called up yonder I’ll be there

2/. On that bright an cloudless morning, when the dead in Christ shall rise,
An the glory of His resurrection share:
When His chosen ones will gather to their homes beyond the skie,
An the roll is called up yonder, I’ll be there.

3/Let us labour for the Master from the dawn till setting sun,
Let us talk of all His wondrous love an care,
Then, when all f life is over, an our work on earth is done,
An the roll is called up yonder, I’ll be there.

QUOTES TO NOTE – life

There are two great days in a person’s life – the day we are born and the day we discover why – William Barclay

DAILY MEDITATIONS
AN ABIDING PROMISE – Psalm 84

There are choice, spiritual truths stated within the verses of this lovely psalm that are mentioned in order to stimulate faith and relationship with God. At the outset, a due emphasis is placed upon knowing and living within the sanctuary of God in order to appreciate the wonder of God in every way. If the sparrow can take delight in making and having a home there, how much His people! No better place could be found to dwell than within the covering of the Lord. It is a blessed thing above all other factors to be spending life in His presence.

Because this occurs, there will be the inevitable consequence of walking in accord with His words and ways. The desire will be present and active in seeking to please Him in everything. As this comes to pass, so the good things of God are introduced and are manifested in a constant manner and measure. The promise is realized: “No good thing will the Lord withhold from those who do what is right” – v11. God’s grace and goodness abound in such a degree and fashion so that the individual is enriched. The Lord did not withhold but sought to bestow all that was wonderful upon His ancient people as they honoured Him and His house.

It is imperative that there is born within you a wholesome and fervent desire for God and His dwelling place and to seek to live under His constant covering. He welcomes all those who would give Him preference above all and in return assures that life will be filled with His choice blessings. Not only does He give promise of what is to be: He is ever in the position where He can make real what He has covenanted. The promise holds good now and you can enter into the reality of His untold blessedness. Life is fulfilled when He is at work in permanent blessing.

CONSECRATE – to an Honoured Calling and Status – 1 Samuel 16

Young David as a shepherd-boy never thought he would one day occupy the throne of Israel. He was quite content to look after a flock of sheep away from the public eye. It was whilst engaged in this humble role that he came to know the LORD and to worship Him and trust Him simply in incredible ways. He obtained the heavenly favour and became destined to be a future monarch of renown.

Whilst serving his flock he is suddenly called home to meet Samuel the prophet. A real surprise awaited! He must hurry home because of this important visitor had requested his presence. He is anointed with oil an set apart, consecrated to be the next king. David must have quietly pondered on this in privacy and quietly committed himself to Jehovah to bring it to pass. He would not envy Saul but remain in the background awaiting the LORD’S timing and workings.

You have been called to kingship with Christ. You are in His kingdom to know and occupy a role of heavenly authority and grace with and through Him, now. Instead of being a victim of sin and Satan, you occupy a spiritual throne of power with Christ and all evil opposition is under your feet. It is now time for you to command in and through Christ and make known your new status.

SACRED SONGS

3/. Thou hast promised to receive us, Poor and sinful though we be;
Thou hast mercy to relieve us, Grace to cleanse, and make us free:
Blessed Jesus, Early let us turn to Thee.

4/.Early let us seek Thy favour; Early let us do Thy will;
Gracious Lord, our only Saviour, With Thyself our bosoms fill.
Blessed Jesus, Thou hast love us – love us still.

DAILY MEDITATIONS
DIVINE INTERVENTION – Psalm 83

The contents of this psalm indicate that Israel was in the depth of trouble. A formidable number of nations were allied together to destroy and wipe out the memory of God’s elect household. They had met together and devised a plan in order to bring to an end the existence of this divinely chosen race. From a natural angle they possessed the numerical and military superiority to cause Israel to be no more. They were in a very strong position to be able to bring about their evil designs. No wonder the psalmist is in a state of spiritual trauma!

It appears to be worsened by the fact that it could be that the Lord was sitting unmoved and undisturbed by the whole thing – v1. He seeks to grab His attention and interference on the issue but at that point there is no response. He does recognize that Israel had known remarkable interventions before when all was against them – vv9-12. He would like to see God up-date and show He was still able to act no matter how strong the enemy might be. He could deal with them easily and victoriously – vv13-16. There is a sense of divine confidence entering into him knowing that God is able to match the foe. His ultimate motive is pure as vv17, 18 reveals. Above all, He wants the name of the Lord to be glorified.

It may well be that you are surrounded by the wicked one and by people that design your downfall and destruction. God may appear to be remote from you and your prayers. Sometimes things seem to take on this view. Be encouraged by the vigilance, diligence and the interest of God at this critical hour. Be like Daniel, who let God deal with his wicked conspirators and their plans! He came quietly through the ordeal with honour and was able to glorify God all the more.

CONSECRATE – TO DIVINE SERVANTHOOD – Exodus 3

Moses always had a sense of conviction that he had a real mission to fulfil in life. He must have been a really frustrated individual at 80 with nothing to show of any worth for his long life. He was now humbly employed in the backside of the desert looking after a flock of sheep. The man who had been taught and trained in a royal household Is reduced to such lowly circumstance. But he had been set apart by Godd to do a job on His behalf. His work among sheep was a learning exercise as he was to eventually shepherd God’s people.

Here in Exodus 3 the moment arrives to be the servant of Jehovah and fulfil a vital service. Go let him clearly know the greatness of himself. He must be aware of who was addressing him. He was and is the great I AM THAT I AM. The One that was calling and backing him was none other than the self-existent One, the One who possessed all authority an power, the true Governor above all. He could be relied upon to bring about the impossible.

Moses with diffidence accepted the role, giving himself in sacred consecration to bring the dream and prophecy to fulfilment. He regarded this service as a holy task an never forgot who he belonged to and it was important to own and honour Him. Because he did so, he sets a lasting example of consecration and servanthood. You have been called by the Lord to make sure that you are truly and fully consecrated to Him an His service.

SACRED SONGS

In Thy Name O Blessed Saviour

If there is one great need today within Christendom it for a real move of Go for a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit. The world about and around demands to witness the Christian Church at its best an this can only be when the Spirit of God is in charge, when its people an ministry are galvanised and motivated by Him. He can do more in five minutes by His presence an power that the body of Christ in its own strength over years.

Lelia (Mrs. C.H.) Morris (1862-1929) was born in Pennsville, Morgan County, Ohio. When her family moved to Malta on the Muskingum River she and her sister and mother had a millinery shop in McConnelsville. She and her husband Charles H. Morris were active in the Methodist Episcopal Church and at the camp meetings in Sebring and Mt. Vernon. She wrote hymns as she did her housework. Although she became blind at age 52 she continued to write hymns on a 28-foot long blackboard that her family had built for her. She is said to have written 1000 texts and many tunes including “Sweeter as the years go by.”

1/. In thy name, O blessed Saviour, Gathered in this sacred place;
Here we seek a Father’s blessing, and pray for needed grace;
From the ocean of thy fulness, Boundless, fathomless and free,
Let a tidal wave come sweeping, Setting hearts at liberty.

Refrain:
Lift the flood-gates, lift the flood-gates, Let the tide come sweeping in;
Blessed tide of full salvation, Washing, cleansing from all sin.

2/.  Lift the flood-gates, let salvation In tremendous currents flow,
To the uttermost fulfilling Thy blest mission here below;
Until myriads of sinners, Borne on love’s resistless tide,
Shall be swept into the kingdom, And believers sanctified. [Refrain]

3/. It is coming, we believe it, Thou dost hear and answer prayer;
It is coming, we shall see it, Thine almighty arm made bare;
Tides of power, tides of glory, Holy tides of perfect love,
Satisfying, overflowing, Coming on us from above. [Refrain]

DAILY MEDITATIONS

THE SUPREME JUDGE – Psalm 82

Highlighted above all is the fact that God is the supreme Judge. He manifests His role sovereignly. The opening remark is – “God presides over heaven’s court” and concludes with “Rise up, O God and judge the earth.”  It is to be known and recognized that He is the One that will exercise and evidence true justice over all of His creatures. No one should be under any illusions with regard to this. He will ultimately make His judgments and sentences apparent. No one will be able to escape His discerning eye and mind and will be dealt with according to their ways.

At the time of the psalmist, those responsible appointed judges did not carry out their duty as they should have done. There were dreadful miscarriages of justice with the wicked favoured and the poor and needy neglected. Instead of being people of integrity and compassion, they were hard and indifferent to the cause of righteousness. Both judges and people needed reminding, at the end of the day all would have to face the One who would judge truly and fairly – Hebrews 9: 27.

At a time when sin is disregarded, there is failure in the laws and judicial system in the land, it is important to know and note that God does not by pass what is occurring at a personal and national level. He, being aware of each detail of every life, observes the ways of all. Let this truth sober your life. There will come the moment when God will duly review your life and there will be escape or excuse. Seeing this is the case, live and act righteously.

FURTHER NOTES ON THE MINOR PROPHETS

(28)

DIVINE EXPECTATION

Micah 7

The prophet senses personally a powerful conviction from the Lord within his being as to what is to be his lot. He has nothing to fear or be alarmed at because he has performed his task and his whole estate and future is in the hands of Jehovah. At a time of upheaval and grave mistrust at all levels without, He has an anchor of hope within that is able to hold and at the same time give certainty of greater fruition. Birthed within is divine expectation that is sure to materialize. His confidence will be duly rewarded at the right time.

1/. HIS EXPECTATION IS THAT THE LORD WILL HEAR HIM – v7

He has not only been the messenger speaking for the Lord to the nation, he is in the happy position of being able to talk to and have communion with the Lord in prayer and share his problems. He knows he will have the ear of the Lord and that his petitions will not be a vanity. When once the ear and attention of the Lord has been obtained there is the guarantee of answer in His time.

 2/. HIS EXPECTATION IS THE LORD WILL SAVE HIM – v7

It is evident that he is seemingly placed in extreme situation of need, but that in no way disturbs or perturbs. Such comes along to try and agitate and aggravate but he is not overwhelmed in the slightest. The Lord is sufficient for every crisis and emergency. His saving power and ability is well known.

3/. HIS EXPECTATION IS THE LORD WILL DEAL WITH HIS ENEMIES –vv8-10

There are those that wish to do him harm and see him come a cropper personally. He does appear exposed to malignant and arrogant foes but he is confident that he will come through this ordeal with flying colours. It may be the Lord is allowing him to go through such in order to enable him to sift and sort himself out to positive good.

4/. HIS EXPECTATION IS THE LORD WILL SHOW COMPASSION – v18

This is an outstanding passage that asserts His grace in forgiveness to the point of the absolute removal of all their sins. The anger of the Lord will cease and His good will is extended to the remission and removal of all evil. Such will be placed in the Sea of God’s Forgetfulness. This ensures for Israel a new start with glorious prospects.

CONCLUSION

The hope is given of seeing much more of God’s goodness based on the oath of the covenant given to the patriarchs. So the prophecy ends on a high note with the assurance that the Lord will honour His word.

CONSECRATE– TO BE SET APART UNTO GOD – Genesis 12:1-5

The patriarch, Abraham, was one of the first to exemplify the issue of consecration when he was getting on in life. He heard the voice of God at 75 calling upon him to do something different and extraordinary. The Lord had told him to get up and move out of the place where he was settled and living, step out in faith and trust and go to the place of His appointment. Would he be big enough to respond wholeheartedly and surrender himself to this mission? Consecrate means to give oneself to someone and something in complete abandonment.

It would seem that he was ready for this and without due hesitation he goes ahead to fulfil heaven’s will. No longer was Abraham to be in charge of his future and destiny. All strings attached to the past was severed as he stepped out in love, faith and obedience to achieve what Jehovah had in mind for him. He was to become a trendsetter and so make known that the way forward to anything great and noteworthy was in total devotion to the Lord.

Israel and Church history both underline the truth and fact that consecration is an absolute necessity if one is know the favour of God and to accomplish significant things. The Lord, it seems, works primarily to bring about willingness in those who would become something for Him. May be at this hour this is what is taking place in your being and life? There is often a battle before the complete surrender of the will to be and do as He desires! Do not hesitate. Find out His destiny at this hour and then consecrate yourself to Him and His purpose,

SACRED SONGS

O Thou Who Camest from  Above

This was composed an written by a man, Charles Wesley, whose heart was inflamed by the fire an passion of God for His kingdom. Having been ignited by the Holy Spirit with Christ and the Christian message he wanted it to burn and break forth amongst the whole of Christendom. This song has found its way an expression throughout a number of Christian generations an communities and been the means of creating a new move of God amongst His people in Gospel witness an enterprise. May be you need to catch the fire and flame again!

1/. O Thou who camest fro above The pure celestial fire to impart,

Kindle a flame of sacred love  On the mean altar of my heart.

2/. There let it for Thy glory burn With inextinguishable blaze;

An trembling to its source return, In humble prayer an fervent praise.

3/. Jesus, confirm my heart’s desire To work, and speak, and think for Thee;

Still let me guard the holy fire, And still stir up Thy gift in me

4/. Ready for all Thy perfect will, My acts of faith an love repeat,

Till death Thy endless mercies seal, An make the sacrifice complete.

DAILY MEDITATIONS

A WORD FROM GOD – Psalm 81

It is apparent from v5 and what is then spoken that this is none other than the voice of the Lord speaking and affirming very important truths for His people to take notice of. Examining the contents one has to confess that it is a word from God. He is desirous that His people will know and develop a listening ear to Himself, then observe what he has to say. This is His plea in v13 “But oh, that my people would listen to me! Oh that Israel would follow Me, walking in my paths.” One senses the deep passion and longing of God regarding His own people.

After making clear that He had been the One that had saved them out of Egypt and relieved the heavy burden that had been upon them, He told them that He had ever sought to prove their faith and character. They were to be under no illusions with regard to His dealings with them. It was imperative that they choose Him as Lord in their midst and dispose of all idols. If they pursued the right course with Him then they would be freed from their enemies and evil and enjoy the abundance of His presence and blessings. It would be the beginning of a blessed era.

The Lord ever seeks to gain a hearing especially amongst those who profess to know Him. His personal and word of directive would come to you today, making clear the ways that He wants you to adopt in life. In particular, make sure that He is absolute Lord and Monarch of your life, faith and conduct. As this obtains, you will surely know His favour and there will flow from His good hand untold benefits that will totally enrich every day. Your obedience will yield great returns.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

Thought for the Day follows an instructive theme for everyday of the Week. We now turn our thoughts to another important factor if there is to be positive dealing with God. The word is ‘joy’, a spiritual reality to be entered into if one is to know God to live a true life and extract the best from life.

JOY – THE JOY OF ANSWERED PRAYER – John  14; 15

Christ desired that those who believed an followed Him should have abounding joy. In John 15:11. He states: “I have told you these things, that My joy an delight may be in you, and that your joy may be of full measure and complete and overflowing”. In one particular area He desired that they taste the pure and life-giving joy; answer to prayer. As they asked God He would do incredible things and so there joy would know no limits. They would never be at the mercy of their circumstances or people but see His hand of power manifest.

In Acts 12, Peter was locked up in prison and it seemed that the death sentence was on him. Herod had planned his removal and God kept things to the critical hour, the seeming last night prior to execution, but a miracle occurred and Peter was divinely released. The body of believers literally rejoiced over the way God move in to perform a major deliverance.

God has not lost His omnipotence, His arm of power to work mightily on your behalf. You may be in a situation now where things look bleak and black but this presents no problem to Him to bring about a glorious answer. Use the weapon of prayer and believe Him to step in and perform the wonder. This is to be your miracle and praise day! Your joy is to abound and your testimony be of His unfailing goodness and power.

Who can Cheer the heart like Jesus?

Author: Thoro Harris

Born: March 31, 1874, Washington, DC. Died: March 27, 1955, Eureka Springs, Arkansas. Buried: International Order of Odd Fellows Cemetery, Eureka Springs, Arkansas. After attending college in Battle Creek, Michigan, Harris produced his first hymnal in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1902. He then moved to Chicago, Illinois at the invitation of Peter Bilhorn, and in 1932, to Eureka Springs, Arkansas. He composed and compiled a number of works, and was well known locally as he walked around with a canvas bag full of handbooks for sale.

True and tender, pure and precious, O how blest to call Him mine!

Refrain
All that thrills my soul is Jesus;   He is more than life to me;
And the fairest of ten thousand,   In my blessed Lord I see.

2/. Love of Christ so freely given.   Grace of God beyond degree,
Mercy higher than the heaven,   Deeper then the deepest sea – refrain

3/. What a wonderful redemption!   Never can a mortal know
How my sin, tho’ red like crimson,   Can be whiter than the snow – refrain

4/. Every need His hand supplying,   Every good in Him I see;

And forever and forever   Praise and glorify the King. .

QUOTES TO NOTE – life

We must let go of the life we have planned, so as to accept the one that is waiting for us – Joseph Campbell

DAILY MEDITATIONS

AN URGENT REQUEST – Psalm 80

The psalm commences with “Please listen, O Shepherd of Israel” indicating a sense of rich desire and urgency.  A further 3 times the plea is made: “Turn us again to yourself, O God Almighty” – vv3, 7, 19, again expressing a deep longing and necessity. Within the heart of the petitioner is a spiritual burden and pressure that the Lord would respond to and intervene in the life of the nation. He knows who he is talking to and is convinced that He is able to work to bring about this important change amongst the elect people. The main thing was that the nation would once more know an intimate relationship with God.

There was an awareness of what had been in the life and history of the state as God had been responsible for her existence, growth and blessing. She had fared well under His sovereign rule and care. Her experience had been like that of a very fruitful vine that had been planted by Him, luxuriant and highly productive. Such was not the case now. The opposite was true. But he believed the Lord could and would bring about a significant change and restore to former glory and blessing.

As you look at your spiritual life you may sense that you are not where you should be. There is no great rate of production in terms of growth, of grace and gift. The Lord does not appear too close and intimate. Remember, His plan is that there will be divine fruit, more fruit and much fruit in every way. Turn to Him with urgency and ask that He will once again significantly renew and touch you so that His blessing will become evident and eminent. This is the kind of prayer that He loves to respond to in a personal manner.

JOY – TURNING SORROW INTO JOY – Esther 4:1-3; 8: 15-17

It was to be an occasion when the Israelites were suddenly thrown into a state of intense panic, sorrow an depression. An enemy had arisen under the name of Haman who had inveterate hatred against Mordecai and the Jews and wanted to see their demise. He got into a favourable situation with the reigning monarch who was prepared to accede to his request of annihilating the people. The decree went forth and things looked very bleak and black for God’s people. Who could save them from this awful prospect?

God is always ahead of this kind of thing. Providentially Esther, a Jewish maid had been chosen and elected to be queen and she was to be instrumental in bringing an answer at this dark hour. Her uncle, Mordecai, encouraged her to take this cause to the king and have the order revoked. He saw that his niece had been placed in this strong position to play the role of the intercessor. He said: “Who knows whether you have been brought to the kingdom for such a time as this?” – Est 4:14. In a unique manner deliverance was made possible, so mourning was turned into great celebration. They could say: ‘the Lord had turned their sorrow into joy”.

So it can be true in your life. You find yourself seemingly under a sentence of death and such looks very ominous and threatening. All has been seemingly raised in opposition to destroy your future and unless there is divine intervention, you are doomed. Be assured, the Lord will provide a deliverer and means of deliverance. There is no situation of an impending nature that cannot be answered. Instead of being overcome by sorrow and sadness, the tables will be turned. You will be exceedingly joyful at the outcome in your Lord.

There is a Land of Pure Delight

Author Isaac Watts was the son of a schoolmaster, and was born in Southampton, July 17, 1674. He is said to have shown remarkable precocity in childhood, beginning the study of Latin, in his fourth year, and writing respectable verses at the age of seven. At the age of sixteen, he went to London to study in the Academy of the Rev. Thomas Rowe, an Independent minister. In 1698, he became assistant minister of the Independent Church, Berry St., London. In 1702, he became pastor. In 1712, he accepted an invitation to visit Sir Thomas Abney, at his residence of Abney Park, and at Sir Thomas’ pressing request, made it his home for the remainder of his life. It was a residence most favourable for his health, and for the prosecution of his literary He did not retire from ministerial duties, but preached as often as his delicate health would permit.

The number of Watts’ publications is very large. His collected works, first published in 1720, embrace sermons, treatises, poems and hymns. The first hymn he is said to have composed for religious worship, is “Behold the glories of the Lamb,” written at the age of twenty. It is as a writer of psalms and hymns that he is everywhere known. Some of his hymns were written to be sung after his sermons, giving expression to the meaning of the text upon which he had preached. Montgomery calls Watts “the greatest name among hymn-writers,” and the honour can hardly be disputed. His published hymns number more than eight hundred.

1/. There is a land of pure delight, Where saints immortal reign,

Infinite day excludes the night, And pleasures banish pain.

Refrain

We’re feeding on the living Bread, We’re drinking at the fountain-head:

An whoso drinketh Jesus said, Shall never, never thirst again.

What! never thirst again? No, never thirst again!

What! never thirst again? No, never thirst again!

And whoso drinketh Jesus sai, Shall never, never thirst again!

2/. There everlasting spring abides, And never withering flowers:
Death, like a narrow sea, divides This heav’nly land from ours.

3/. O could we make our doubts remove, Those gloomy thoughts that rise,
And see the Canaan that we love With unbeclouded eyes!

4/. Could we but climb where Moses stood, And view the landscape o’er,
Not Jordan’s stream, nor death’s cold flood, Should fright us from the shore

DAILY MEDITATIONS

PRAYER FOR THE NATION – Psalm 79

According to Matthew Henry, “This psalm, if penned with any particular event in view, is with most probability made to refer to the destruction of Jerusalem and the temple, and the woeful havoc made of the Jewish nation by the Chaldeans under Nebuchadnezzar.” Taking note of what took place at that time one can understand the awful mess the nation was in. The fall of Jerusalem and Judah to the Babylonians was a terrible moment for God’s people. This is fully expressed by Jeremiah in his book of Lamentations. It was a tragedy of enormous proportions that made many feel there was no hope of any recovery of national identity and status.

There is only one to turn to in a national calamity of this nature: it is the Lord. The plea was for intervention of the greatest quality and power so that the Lord would come into a right place, where pagans could see and know that He ruled. Repentance is expressed and forgiveness sought in the hope that there would be a great reversal in the nation’s affairs. The history of the restoration period proves that God did hear. The nation was brought back home and a new sanctuary built. The Lord turned the captivity of His people in a miraculous manner.

You have a responsibility towards the nation in which you were born and live. In its present degraded estate a duty is laid upon you to pray much for spiritual revival and renewal. Make it a daily habit to intercede for the well being of this land so that the tide of evil, which is ruining it, will be turned. Learn to stand in the gap to plead for the complete overthrow of the works of darkness. Your contribution can make the essential spiritual difference in your life and locality.
