SACRED SONGS

Jesus Shall reign Where’er the Sun

This is a great hymn that really does justice to Christ, placing Him as the most important figure in human affairs and this world. Though He was humiliated on the Cross he is now exalted to the throne of the universe and this world. He does not simply govern the Christian Church, He is Lord over all in this world and it will become manifest. Wherever he reigns is sure to be one of peace and prosperity!

Perhaps one of the most interesting occasions on which this hymn was used was that on which King George, the sable, of the South Sea Islands, but of blessed memory, gave a new constitution to his people, exchanging a heathen for a Christian form of government. Under the spreading branches of the banyan trees sat some thousand natives from Tonga, Fiji, and Samoa, on Whitsunday, 1862, assembled for Divine worship. Foremost amongst them all sat King George himself. Around him were seated old chiefs and warriors who had shared with him the dangers and fortunes of many a battle—men whose eyes were dim, and whose powerful frames were bowed down with the weight of years. But old and young alike rejoiced together in the joys of that day, their faces most of them radiant with Christian joy, love, and hope. It would be impossible to describe the deep feeling manifested when the solemn service began, by the entire audience singing Dr. Watts’ hymn…

Who so much as they could realize the full meaning of the poet’s words? For they had been rescued from the darkness of heathenism and cannibalism and they were that day met for the first time under a Christian constitution, under a Christian king, and with Christ Himself reigning in the hearts of most of those present. That was indeed Christ’s kingdom set up in the earth.

1/. Jesus shall reign where’er the sun  does its successive journeys run;
His kingdom spread from shore to shore,  till moons shall wax and wane no more.

2/. To Jesus endless prayer be made,  and endless praises crown his head;
His name like sweet perfume shall rise  with every morning sacrifice.

3/. People and realms of every tongue  dwell on his love with sweetest song;
And infant voices shall proclaim  their early blessings on his name.

4/.. Where He displays His healing power, Death and the curse are known no more;
In Him the tribes of Adam boast More blessings than their father lost.
5/. Blessings abound where’er he reigns;  all prisoners leap and loose their chains;
The weary find eternal rest,  and all who suffer want are blest.

6/. Let every creature rise and bring  honours peculiar to our King;
Angels descend with songs again, and earth repeat the loud amen!

DAILY MEDITATIONS

THE SIN OF COVETOUSNESS – 1 Kings 21

One of the divine commandments is: “You shall not covet” – Exodus 20: 17. God could have not been clearer. The king was under the same rule as the subject as far as God was concerned. Here Ahab set his eyes and heart upon property that was not his and wanted it. Approaches were made to Naboth to sell him the vineyard adjacent to the king’s territory but he would not. He had every right to refuse because it had been a legacy that had been left from generation to generation. The king should have honoured the man for his sense of purpose and integrity. Instead he becomes irritated about it.

The wicked queen plots the death of this honourable man. She employs a method of involving God within her scheme to achieve the death and removal of this choice individual having him accused of blasphemy –vv8-14. Ahab goes to claim the possession he was not entitled to and was met by Elijah. In no way was God going to be linked up with these proceedings and so sentence is given against him and the queen. There was to be an awful price paid for the shedding of innocent blood.

The evil of covetousness must be put from the heart and life. Intense longing for other people’s goods and property is not a commendable thing. It is important to learn to be content with what we have and in pleasing the Lord in righteousness and goodness. He has a way of adding those essential blessings and requirements. Do not lust in a sinful manner after anyone or anything that can lead to downfall and ruination. History is strewn will people who missed it because covetousness was allowed to dictate their desires.
