A RESTORED RELATIONSHIP

HOSEA 3

ln the few verses of this chapter we have revealed the wonder of a restored relationship. lt was nothing short of a staggering miracle for this to come about but it truly happened. One would have said, looking at the situation both of Jehovah and Hosea, ‘Impossible!’ but it sure came to pass. No one would have given the faintest hope of the marriage being restored to a desirable and pleasurable consummation but it was realised beyond all expectations.

(1) THE DIRECTION THAT WAS GIVEN – v1

Hosea certainly was under divine orders in this whole matter. Right from the outset he had listened to and was submissive to the will and command of the Lord. It had not been easy in the first place to take this woman knowing what was in store but he had done so. It must have been extremely difficult to respond to this one seeing how matters stood. He was under orders both ‘to bring her back and love her.’ Surely she had forfeited all rights to any restoration? But he was to act from a spirit of amazing grace and forgiveness and reflect the same nature as the Lord. This was but a picture and portrayal of Him with His people. Hosea was playing out and demonstrating something infinitely greater.

(2) THE POSITION THAT GOMER WAS IN – v2

The fact that Hosea had to buy her back with a redemptive price would clearly show that his former partner was being sold in the slave market. Having abused herself, all self-esteem is lost and the future dark and hopeless with no one to really care about her. She no doubt saw Hosea in the market place and felt ashamed and disgusted about herself and condition. She would be going for the highest bidder but who wanted her‘? lt must have been quite a shock to hersystem to hear him make his successful bid and obtain her. It would be even more surprising to find out that he was interested in and committed to a restored marriage union!

(3) THE PROBATION PERIOD THAT WAS IMPOSED — v3

In order to help her and the prospects of an abiding bond in the future, she had to serve an allotted time under probation. She was given another opportunity to amend her life and ways and to prove herself worthy of such a glorious husband. It was essential to receive and possess a new spirit into her being and make sure that she separated herself to one love. She could not afford to miss out again. The probation was but an illustration of God’s dealings with His people.

(4) THE CONCLUSION THAT WAS FINALLY REALISED – v5

The end of the affair was to spell well for both, especially to the restored partner. Instead of being destitute of a husband and all the attendant blessings, everything is back to a happy marriage. All is forgiven and forgotten and rich favour is manifested at every level. Gomer does not want and neither do God’s people.
