THE ANOINTING LORD – MATTHEW 3:13; 17; JOHN 1:29-34; ACTS 2:33

THE ANOINTED: Jesus is the anointed One hence He is called the Christ, the Anointed. We are not left in any doubt on this front with regard to Him. John the Baptist was given this means of identification of the Messiah, Son of God, by the descent of the Holy Spirit upon Him – John 1:33. He was anointed that day and it became immediately manifest. Firstly in His confrontation with the evil one – Luke 4:1, 14. As He commenced His dynamic ministry in word and deed He revealed He was confirming the prophetic Word – Luke 4:18; Isaiah 61. In Acts 10:38 we are informed that the reason for His power-packed ministry was due to the Holy Spirit. He said himself that “He casts out demons by the Holy Spirit of God.” The Christ, the Anointed One, has been exalted on high.

THE ANOINTED ONES: He came to bring into being an anointed family, His Church. As Lord and Head of the Church it was and is His will that the anointing rest upon His people. In His ascension and exaltation He has won the right to bestow upon Christendom as a whole this same blessing. John the Baptist affirmed that He would do this – John 1:33. The Lord before His decease and ultimate ascent to heaven spoke of the Holy Spirit – John 14-16 and of the need for His servants to wait until they had received this choice benefit – Luke 24:49; Acts 1:4. The Church was to live, flow and grow through the anointing.

THE ANOINTING: The anointing of the Christian Body took place on the day of Pentecost and this was to make an essential spiritual difference. The Acts of the Apostles is a bold and clear testimony to this particular fact. The Church did not simply talk about the Holy Spirit; they knew His mantling and mentoring in a personal and powerful fashion. There are some things to be known with respect to this gracious blessing. The Spirit’s descent meant a spiritual ascent for the Christian community. They moved up and on in the things of God.

1/. THE ANOINTING IS BESTOWED WHEN THE SPIRITUAL CONDITIONS EXIST

It has to be stated that this unique blessing is known and experienced in the timing of God and when certain factors are in place. It was so in the life of Christ. He comes on the scene at the perfect moment with all the essential qualifications and credentials for this special gifting. It is so with the child of God. There must be repentance and baptism in water – Acts 2:38. An obedient and believing condition of heart and life – Acts 5:32. A genuine thirst and longing also must be evident – John 7:37-39. Fear also can be a preventative – Luke 11:11-13.

2/. THE ANOINTING IS CONFIRMATION ON THE PERSON AND WORK OF CHRIST

One of the vital proofs of the saving and regenerative work of Christ is in the advent and work of the Holy Spirit into the life of the believer. He comes with His presence and power to testify that what Christ came to do is effectual and real and can be wholly depended upon. He is a true and divine witness that seals the great task that Christ has accomplished. Our anointing by Christ signifies that He is the Anointed and that His life and ministry is attested as being complete. The holy Spirit seals Christ and His work within us – 2 Corinthians 1:21, 22; Ephesians 1:13, 14.

3/. THE ANOINTING IS IN ORDER THAT LIFE AND SERVICE BE EMPOWERED

The work of the Holy Spirit is to achieve a dual role: to enhance both the life and character and to enrich work and service. He comes to clothe and endue with power and authority – Luke 24:49. His person and presence is sure to do our person and presence good. The fact of His incoming and indwelling is purposed to create and cultivate to high-quality at the individual and personal level. Life inspired by His nearness and company makes a difference. But then there is His power and energy to become a witness for Christ in word and deed – Acts 1:8. The Acts of the Apostles is Jesus still in business through the power of the Holy Spirit.

4/. THE ANOINTING IS ABLE TO EFFECT ALL THAT THE LORD HAS DESIGNED

The Church does not have to look to worldly ideas and philosophies to effect the power of the Gospel. It is not dependent upon human gimmicks to attract and influence into a divine experience. The Holy Spirit is able empowers His servants and the divine Word to achieve the impossible – c.f. 1 Thessalonians 1:5; 1 Corinthians 2:4. When the Spirit is present and active all that needs to be done on a divine order and scale will be done.

5/. THE ANOINTING IS TO BE SUSTAINED AND MAINTAINED ALWAYS

The responsibility of all Christendom is know and live under the daily anointing. To be being filled with the Holy Spirit is not an option, it is a divine command – Ephesians 5:18-20. It is to be recognized we have received this divine anointing – 1 John 2:20, 28 and to make sure we do not grieve the Holy Spirit in any way – Ephesians 4:30. The Lord waits to give much more of this blessing to those who are in the right condition.

The life and work of Christ must continue unabated, in fact, it should be intensified and increased by the greater outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon life and ministry – Joel 2:28. It is a case not of less and less but more and more. There is no limit to what Christ the Anointed One desires to do through His anointed ones and they should be ready and willing for this blessing in all of its fulness and dynamic.
