3. MAN AND SATAN.
1/. MAN – CREATED IN THE IMAGE OF GOD TO HAVE DOMINION
Gen 1:26-27. God had a wonderful plan in His heart, when He created man and woman “in His own image”. Because He is love, His desire was for beings of like-mind and heart with whom He could share His purposes for the universe and who would rule the heavens and the earth with Him like sons.
2/. SATAN — CREATED AS A VERY POWERFUL AND BEAUTIFUL ANSEL TO SERVE GOD
Before He made the heavens and the earth, God created angels – spirit beings whose purpose is to worship and serve God.
a) Rebellion of angels. Ez 28:14-15. Lucifer, which means ‘Day Star’ was created the most beautiful and powerful of all God’s angels. However, pride entered his heart and he wanted to become like God. Speaking of him the Bible says, “your heart was filled with pride because of all your beauty. You corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendour, so I threw you to the earth…..” (vl 7).
b) Result of rebellion. Isa 14:12-15. God caste him out of heaven, as well as one third of the angels who joined in the rebellion (Rev 12:4). He now changed his name to Satan, which means ‘the Adversary’. Separated from the glory of the Creator God, he lost the beauty and light, which he at one time had. The angels who fell with him also lost their glory and became evil sprits in God’s newly created world. Satan’s evil ambitions did not change, however, so he continued with another plan to try and usurp God’s throne. He went after man, the being God “created in His own image”.
3. THE TEMPTATION OF THE FIRST MAN AND WOMAN
a) Test of man. Gen 2:9. 16-17. God gave His first man and woman authority over all the earth. To keep them safe from Satan, He planted two special trees in the garden, where Adam and Eve lived. He also gave them a command and free will – whether to obey Him or rebel.
* ‘The Tree of Life’. This represented the life and authority of God Himself, so in eating its fruit they would be filled more and more with God’s life, love and glory.
* ‘The Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil’. This represented the result of Satan’s rebellion – sin, sickness and death.
b) Rebellion of man. Gen 3:1-7. They would continue to have a deep relationship with God and dominion of the whole creation, if they obeyed their loving creator God and remained sinless. However, Satan deceived Eve, telling them that by eating of the fruit of the ‘Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil’ they would become like gods. They believed the lie and rebelled against God’s command, eating of the fruit.
4. THE RESULT OF THEIR REBELLION
Gen 3:8-11. Through that one act of sin, man lost the glory and image of God and the dominion over creation. Satan then took the power and authority given to Adam and Eve and exercised his dominion over the earth, resulting in death, disease and decay (v!6-19). All generations following the first man and woman haveinherited their fallen nature and have come under the power and dominion of Satan (Rom 5:12). People’s hearts every where are now filled with:-
* Idolatry. Rom 1:20-23.
* Immorality. Rom 1:24-27.
* All kinds of wickedness. Rom 1:28-32.
However, God was not taken unawares and had a great plan to bring man back to Himself, to release them from Satan’s grip and to restore them to His original plan of being His sons and sharing His throne (Heb 2:14-15). He began to prepare the world for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ.
Lord, I commit myself not to listen to the lies of Satan, but to continue to follow You, who is Life itself.
