A YOUNG PROTÉGÉ

Reading 2 Timothy 1

INTRODUCTION

In viewing and studying the life and ministry of Timothy one certainly gets the strong idea and impression that he was a young man that was divinely primed and timed by God to serve his day and generation.

GOOD NAME: His name has a meaning of immense worth that merits consideration. It implies ‘honoured of God’. He was not only honoured and valued by the apostle, Paul; he had a good standing and relationship with God. He had, as his life reveals, a wholesome accord with heaven that caused him to be spiritually primed and time to serve heaven’s interests on earth. He was a young protégé with a praiseworthy name. LASTING WITNESS: From the New Testament Scriptures, the Acts, Epistles and the letters to Timothy from Paul, there is a permanent record of this young minister who graced the infant Church and played an important role in it. What has been left on sacred record makes it possible to get a true image and understanding of this individual who conducted a vital ministry at a needful time in the Christian Church alongside his mentor, the apostle Paul. He was a young protégé that was to carry and convey enduring testimony to his life and ministry which has touched the whole of Christendom. WORTHY CHARACTER: What is stated of him gives the good impression that he was truly a person of quality nature and that he did manifest godly influence at a crucial stage in his life. He certainly was encouraged by Paul in this but he was ready to respond to wholesome teaching and direction – see 1Timothy 4:12. He was able to set the standard and tone for others and graced the Church in a manner that revealed that he was inspired and motivated by God. FULFILLED MINISTRY: From what is written and recorded of him in the Scriptures, it appears that he was able to function with the apostle in a noble service to Christ, the apostle and the churches in a positive, quiet and distinguished manner. Paul had great confidence in him and his abilities to do a good job, leaving him to establish new believers in Christ and help the churches in many ways. RIGHTLY PRIMED AND TIMED: Reviewing the documentation concerning him it is possible to note the many folks that contributed to his priming and timing. Quite a number of people were at hand at important periods of his life to impart helpful factors that would make him and his ministry.

1/.  THE INPUT AND INFLUENCE OF A GODLY GRANDPARENT – 2 Timothy 1: 5; 3: 15;

Mention is made of the fact that he had known the blessing and service of a godly grandmother by the name of Lois. She not only knew the Lord herself and the Scriptures, but sensed the responsibility and need to make sure that her grandson was properly tutored from the earliest moment. She sowed sacred seeds of divine truth within his young mind and heart which evidently took root very early that was to bring forth a greater harvest later on. This older, lady believer knew that her grandson needed to be primed as soon as possible in the knowledge of God and His word, sensing he had a destiny to fulfil of note.

‘Lois, the grandmother, appears to have been the first convert to Christianity: she instructed her daughter Eunice, and both brought up Timothy in the Christian faith; so that he had a general knowledge of it before he met with St. Paul at Lystra’ – A. Clarke

2/.  THE INPUT AND INFLUENCE OF A GODLY MOTHER – 1Timothy 1: 5

She simply added to what her mother had taught her and he was in the situation where he was prepared to be both nurtured naturally and nourished spiritually. He was ready to be primed from the one that valued him immensely. Lois believed that her son was not only special to her but to the Lord and that she had a charge to fulfil in seeing he was made aware of the Lord and of the importance of the Holy Scriptures in coming to appreciate Him and His ways. Possible the best teacher that any child has is its mother because she knows and understands her child better than any other and it is usual that most children have enormous respect for this loving guardian. The close connection was used to telling spiritual effect.

‘The pains, which these two worthy persons took to impress the mind of their son in his childhood with sentiments of piety and virtue, is a fit example for the imitation of all mothers; who, if they take the same pains with their children, may hope that by the blessing of God their care will be followed with the same happy effects’ - Dr. Macknight.

3/.  THE INPUT AND INFLUENCE OF A GODLY SERVANT – Philippians 2: 22; Romans 6: 21; 1 Timothy 1: 2

The time came when he met the apostle Paul and in a mutual manner both responded   and rightly reacted to one another in the will and purpose of God – Acts 16: 1-3. Paul found a person who could be taught and trained and made into a travelling associate who would be able to serve Christ, him and the fellowships wherever they went. He would be a humble, teachable protégé and student that would grace Christ’s Church for good and profit. Timothy discovered a man of God who would be an outstanding father - mentor both to his life and work and so there was immediate fusion of spirits that was to remain constant to the end. He was ready at all times to receive godly instruction and be directed by this honest and honourable servant of Christ. This great apostle did everything with his power to prime and time him for a key role as can be noted in the letters wrote to him.

4/.  THE INFLUENCE OF A GODLY PRESBYTERY – 1Timothy1: 18; 4: 14

Other leaders and elders of churches were to have a shaping and moulding impact upon him. He would meet numberless people who were equally called to exercise a role of leadership within the Christian community and he would be blessed by them. It is apparent that as he commenced his spiritual career and ministry that such did minister in a divine and positive manner that which was to serve as an encouragement for a lifetime’s service – 1 Timothy 1: 18; 4: 14. Through the prophetic he was divinely primed for the work ahead.

‘Some think that the foregoing prophecies, refer to revelations which the apostle himself had received concerning Timothy; while others think that the word is to be understood of advices, directions, and exhortations, which the apostle had previously delivered to him’ – A. Clarke

CLEMENT OF ROME [Epistle to the Corinthians], states it was the custom of the apostles “to make trial by the Spirit,” that is, by the “power of discerning,” in order to determine who were to be overseers and deacons in the several churches planted. So CLEMENT OF ALEXANDRIA says as to the churches near Ephesus, that the overseers were marked out for ordination by a revelation of the Holy Ghost to St. John.

        5/.  THE INFLUENCE OF GODLY CHURCHES – Philippians 2; 19-23; Colossians 1: 1

Certainly, those churches that he helped to plant and visited with this great apostle-missionary had some service to render to him that helped him in his early ministry. It would seem that Paul encouraged the church at Philippi to render him support and so enable him to a great work amongst them. For some time it appears he had charge in Ephesus and that he had a vital teaching ministry to exercise and he required the churches to respond – 1 Timothy 1: 3. They were in the business of priming him for the work God had for him especially went Paul was taken.

CONCLUSION

There is still the need for the older and younger generation of leaders to be spiritually bonded together so that the Church of Christ will benefit as a whole. The younger should be prepared to be mentored aright so that they are in position to fill the gaps that are created by the home-call of God’s choice servants.

GIRL POWER

What does it mean to be a 21st century woman?

Christian Caine shares her thoughts on the issue

WHEN I SAY ‘21st-century woman I don’t mean an independent or a career-focused woman. It’s important that we don’t stereotype what a 21st-century woman is, based on some cultural values.

Rather, we should note that we’re 21st- century women simply because this is the 21st century, and that doesn’t mean that we have to behave in any way contrary to God’s word, or biblical expectations of what being a woman is and is not.

Being strong, full of vision, passion and purpose and having your identity formed in Christ is not a negative thing. In fact, on the contrary; we are better positioned to serve humanity if our inner core is not one of weakness and unhealthy co-dependence.

A 21st-century woman knows who she is in Christ. Her identity is not derived from her past mistakes, the limitations imposed by others, cultural or traditional expectations, but rather from the Word of God and who Christ says that she is.

She is beautiful, she is strong, she is steadfast, she is tenacious, she is feminine, she is a warrior, she is a helpmeet, she is industrious, she is submissive, she is the Proverbs 31 woman. This is an exciting time to be a woman and serving God in ministry. I believe ministry is finding a need and meeting it, and that every one of us has a responsibility to see all that we are and do as ministry, and an opportunity to serve humanity

‘A 21st-century woman knows who she is in

Christ. Her identity isn’t derived from her past’

God is truly raising up a generation of women who are being empowered to make a difference. I am so excited about the future and all of the possibilities in God. My prayer is that every person rises up to do everything that God has called them to do, and be all that God has called them to be.

There has been a definite changing of the guard when it comes to women in ministry and women’s ministry as a whole. We need always to be grateful to those who paved the way for us; 20 years ago there weren’t many women who were allowed to flourish in ministry; or given the opportunity to do so. Some really had to fight and pay a price to pave the way.

Today, overall, there is less resistance to women in ministry and a greater understanding of the value of women coming alongside men, and together representing the full image of Christ. Women are a great strength and dignity to ministry, and help to complete the picture.

We still have a way to go, but overall, there are definitely more women functioning at every level of ministry than there were 20 years ago. That is why it is important to attend women’s conferences and be part of the global sisterhood, because it is ministries like these that God has raised up, that help to place value on womanhood.

PRIMED, TIMED TO BECOME PRIME MINISTER

Reading    Genesis 37

Introduction

YOUNG PRIME TIMER: Looking at the life of Joseph right from the outset it is possible to conclude that here was a young person who was divinely primed and timed to succeed. There was an evident plan with respect to his existence and this knowledge and conviction inspired and directed his thinking, believing and procedures, and it was present so early in him. None are too young to be primed and timed by God, in fact, He loves it that way. EVIDENT DIVINE TOKENS: It is possible to discern and trace evidences of this priming and timing and know that these factors can be reproduced again in others. He is but a pattern set up by God of what can actually occur again and again as his life is viewed, valued and the things that were birthed and developed in him be further generated in those who desire the same. One of the great reason for the record and signs of this special feature is that it will promote even more being primed and timed people by God. GREAT QUALITY THROUGHOUT: Joseph was not a five minute wonder. He did not simply burn and shine for a short while, but consistently through his career on earth in his relationship with God and his life and work, he demonstrated immense graces, virtues and gifts that are most noticeable. As each stage and phase is negotiated he expresses tremendous qualities that pleased heaven and made him a worthy and noble person to be commended to all.

Here are some of the things to be observed that serve as a present inspiration.

1.      HE WAS BIRTHED INTO A CHOSEN RACE

From a very early age he would be conscious of the fact and reality that he was special and unique. The reason for this would be the knowledge of his ancestry and pedigree. He had a father, grandfather and great-grandfather who had known unusual and extraordinary experiences with God and that his family had been singled out as chosen by God to fulfil an exceptional destiny, and he was an essential part of it. It had all started with Abraham – Genesis 12: 1-4.

Those who have been divinely born again are divinely chosen and are a new race of people chosen to succeed and achieve divine expectations – see Ephesians 1: 4. Christians are not low but high-born to rise to eternal prominence and presidency!

2.      HE POSSESSED A SPIRITUAL AND LOVING FATHER

One of the great blessings and advantages that was his lot in earliest days was to have a good, godly father. Jacob had not been the best of men but he had always entertained a deep desire for God and en route in his life God had been shaping him up in many ways. He had a great story to tell of God’s goodness, faithfulness and promises and in Joseph he found a good listener and learner. With tender, generous and spiritual care he invested into this son that he believed was different and was destined for significant things. Joseph was prepared to be mentored and this was a means of priming and timing by God.

It goes without saying that every Christian has a great loving Father that wills to share things of enormous value and benefit. We must possess the aptitude to listen and learn and so be primed and timed in and according to His will.

3.      HE HAD DEEP ASPIRATION AFTER THE THINGS THAT MATTERED

This youth was not lacking in desires of a God-ward nature and it seems apparent that he was reaching out for the deeper and greater considerations of life. He did not want to exist in a vacuum but longed for real purpose to enter into his being and procedure. It is evident that he had moral and spiritual principles operative in his living which God must have been pleased with. There was no coarseness, vulgarity or unbecoming mannerisms only the will to be a quality young man. At this time God must have been pleased by giving him some unusual dreams that evidently had some immense significance with respect to the future – Genesis 37: 5-10.

It is vital that at the earliest stage possible we make known our affection for God and aspirations for spiritual realities and blessing.

4.      HE LEARNED TO COPE WITH ADVERSITY

He is one of the characters of the Bible that we know knew how to deal with major, personal problems and afflictions. His brothers were not very pleased with him and revealed their evil attitudes. Being sold into slavery and sold as a slave was not a very nice thing to happen but he managed it with grace and dignity. Being made a prisoner was also a galling experience but somehow he holds his head high and maintains his faith. In such, he was divinely primed, time and sustained – see Psalm 105: 17-19.

No Christian believer is immune from adversity and trial and must see such as part of God’s training and timing for greater status. They are part of the divine deal in coming to effectual leadership and ministry. Within those experiences a proper spiritual attitude must be birthed and developed – see James 1: 2-4.

5.      HE RESISTED THE SUBTLE TEMPATION TO SIN

Opportunity readily presented itself to sin but he reacted rightly against it through the wisdom and grace of God. It was quite a thing to be desired by the mistress of the house and she could put on the charm and make things seductive. But he was primed and timed by God to reject this trap and safeguard God’s Name and his own integrity and spirituality – Genesis 39: 8-10. His name has gone down historically as one person who knew how to confront temptation and overcome.

The Christian is assured that temptation will come to try but that there is a way of escape if it is divinely sought – 1 Corinthians 10: 13. Your reaction to this sort of thing will reveal whether you are primed and timed by God.

6.      HE WAS ABLE TO USE THE SKILLS OF MANAGEMENT

He did possess unique skills and abilities that marked him out as a person who possessed wisdom and strategy to direct things in a successful manner. As he was primed and timed by God he was graced with practical as well as spiritual powers that enabled him to give leadership. In a humble but dynamic manner he was able to use his God-given talents and potential for good, in Potiphar’s home, the prison and later in a national way. He would be the first to recognise that God had equipped him with such aptitudes.

As life is lived for God, it is within His sovereign power to bestow and bless people with certain capacities that cause them to be fruitful and stand out in ministry. He can take ordinary people, prime and time them for exceptional service – e.g. Peter, from fisherman to apostle etc.

7.      HE MANIFESTED A GREAT SPIRIT OF FORGIVENESS

The time came when he had to evidence a terrific attitude towards his brothers that had greatly grieved, wounded and offended him. But he knew that God had primed and timed him in order to demonstrate this spiritual grace and he made this obvious – Genesis 45; 1—8. It says that ‘Joseph could not refrain himself from all that stood by’ – v1. This was the crucial moment when love, grace and forgiveness had to break out in an incredible manner. He had been made ready for this display by God and he was not lacking in this grace.

It is possible to discover and know how good and great people are when this comes into view. Joseph had not become hardened by all that had gone wrong but softened by God to give an example of unreserved mercy, forgiveness and absolution. God is glorified when this is in full view.

CONCLUSION

The same God that was with Joseph and in his generation is still existent and operates in similar manner. None are too young or old to be primed and timed by and for Him for major significant roles.

There are stages and experiences to be successfully negotiated by His help and input and when is all worked out, the person is in a place to live and serve the Lord to the maximum.

AGE CONCERN  by Rev. joy gascoigne

LOTS OF PEOPLE SEE

how stars like Madonna look, and watch the things they do, but what’s really going on?

Michigan-born Madonna was the third of eight children. Her mother died of breast cancer when she was just years old. Madonna later said, ‘I became an over-achiever to get approval from the world.’

Now with a career spanning three decades, she turns 50 this year.

No doubt there are lots of factors in the discussion about age; our health, of attitude, the company we keep, and the make-up we use all play a part

It’s true that what we do stems from who we are, but the Western world has a big emphasis on image, so that how we look almost takes priority over anything else. So how can we grow older gracefully? First of all, grow older thankfully. Many people don’t live to see even middle age! If you’re in good health you’ve a lot to be thankful for.

Take care of yourself, watch your diet, and try to rest and keep fit. In the UK we’re blessed with the opportunity to live in a wonderful country. Enjoy, and thank God!

Second, remember you’re a human being, not a human doing. Often it’s easy to evaluate the quality of our life by what we do. Look after what goes on inside.

Don’t allow yourself to become bitter or critical. Don’t become cynical or carry baggage from the past. Live largely, and to quote the Message New Testament, ‘love from the centre of who you are’. There’s a great story of a little girl who went to the funfair with her daddy. She had a little money to spend and immediately ran to the candy stall, and bought a huge pink candy. Her father looked on and asked if she was really able to eat it. ‘Don’t worry, Daddy’, she replied. I’m much bigger inside than I look on the outside’.

Finally, go first class. It’s about attitude really. We each only have one life to live, and so it’s to be lived to the full. Stay positive, and take the opportunities that come your way.

Try something new – a fun hobby or sport, perhaps.

Go the extra mile and be part of the solution, not part of the problem. Be a reliable friend, not just a number in the crowd. And by the way, happy birthday, Maddona!

PRIMED AND TIMED FOR GREATNESS

Reading     Genesis 37

Introduction

One cannot fail to be impressed when the life, character and Joseph, the beloved son of Jacob is studied. Reading between the lines and the incidents that took place, it is obvious that he was divinely primed and timed by God in order to attain true greatness and to set up an example for all time for others to emulate.

From the earliest of days to their climax, he was an individual who was different and made great contribution to his generation because he knew what it was to have the hand of God upon his life and affairs. It was how he desired it and willingly consecrated and complied with all what was required of him by God. He allowed God to lead, inspire and work things out even when things were extremely difficult and dark at times to understand.

It is possible to trace how he was brought to the place of greatness and what things contributed in the process.

1/.   HE WAS REARED UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF A GOD-FEARING FATHER – Genesis 30: 22-24; 37: 1-3

There is little doubt that this aged, spiritual patriarch had some worthy and noble inspiration to impart to this son that he loved. One of the reasons why he had a strong bond and affection for him must have been due to the spiritual attitude that this son had. He seemed to have a real bent towards God and the things of God, and possibly his best conversations were with this lad who had a real openness to spiritual reality. Jacob was able to prime him and set aspirations in his heart of a holy character.

2/.   HE APPARENTLY SOUGHT TO LIVE THE KIND OF LIFE THAT PLEASED GOD – Genesis 37: 2

Although he maybe regrettably seemed to be a tale bearer it does reflect the fact that he   was different to his brothers and there was a wholesome rectitude about his conduct. So early he is demonstrating the fact that he had a quality standard of behaviour that must have drawn the attention of heaven. There was a healthy motivation of being where he sensed he must be committed to righteousness – see John 8: 29.

3/.  HE WAS THE RECIPIENT OF DIVINE REVELATION THAT WAS TO PREDICT TO HIS DESTINY – Genesis 37: 5-10

It must be recognised that it was God who gave him the two dreams in his youth and would suggest that the favour of God was upon him. There was something about him so early in life that commanded the attention of heaven. In his teens God decides to prime him with supernatural knowledge that was to have great bearing and influence upon his future. This somehow would never leave him but be a source of comfort, strength and expectancy.

4/.   HE WAS READY TO ACCEPT HIS CHANGE OF CIRCUMSTANCES AND SOUGHT TO UTILIZE HIS TIME AND TALENTS – Genesis 37: 18-36; 39: 1-6

He could easily have thought that things had gone off track when he finds himself a victim of incredible conditions. Suddenly he is a slave and finds himself in a slave market in Egypt. This was the opposite end to his dreams. They now appeared to turn into a nightmare but he does not allow his new surroundings to frustrate and make a failure of him and his destiny. He knuckles down and sets about his fresh situation with faith, wisdom and vigour and so rises to a place of prominence. The slave is primed and timed to govern an important home. He is learning the ropes of being a true and good administrator.

5/.   HE WAS ABLE TO REACT RIGHTLY TO THE SEVERE TEMPTATION THAT WAS ASSAILED  HIM – Genesis 37: 7-12

In the furnace of temptation, allurement and seduction he manages to express a strong, moral commitment both Godward and manward. He could have failed and fallen for the trap set for him but he was morally and spiritually primed to reject the overtures of a charming seductress. There was no way that he was going to forfeit his ethical rectitude and lose the favour and smile of God whatever the cost. He must have regretted that this should take place and that this woman would sell herself for some temporary lust. He was not taken in by her advances.

6/.    HE TRULY SHOWED HIS CHARACTER WHEN DEMOTED AND MADE A PRISONER – Genesis 39: 13- -23

Instead of griping and groaning in prison over a lost position he sees a new role that he must give himself to. Rather than sulk and complain to God over his new, untoward and painful lot, He primes himself to make use of his time and talents in uncongenial circumstances. There is a job that can and ought to be done that would benefit others and help in the time at his disposal. Because of this, God’s favour is towards him and so is the keeper of the prison. Even in those hard conditions he is ready to serve the butler and baker. He is still up to spiritual exercise – Genesis 40.

7/.   HE WAS DIVINELY PROVEN AND READY WHEN HIS MOMENT OF EXALTATION ARRIVED – Genesis 41

Although the time is seemingly protracted in prison it would seem he learns to await God’s timing – see Psalm 105: 17-22. The fact that he was spiritually in tune when Pharoah sent for him indicates that he had learned to rest in God. He did not know how events would turn in his favour but he must have known deep within his spirit that being in Egypt was no accident. What was essential? It was important to be toned up and prepared for the next step and stage. Later he was able to tell his brothers that it was God who had worked everything out – Genesis 45: 7, 8.

CONCLUSION

God knows how to plan and schedule all for those who He would promote and use to serve His purposes and have a heart towards Him. It can happily commence early in one’s life and be the inspiration throughout. The vital factor is o be committed to Him and whatever He has designed and being sure that ‘all things work together for good to those who love God’ – Romans 8: 28.

A PROVEN PRIME TIMER

READING    JOB 1

INTRODUCTION

Job can be considered as one of the most outstanding men that ever lived. He certainly had length of days and during his lifetime showed beyond question that he was an individual of sterling worth. This is why he is mentioned in the Bible and why he finds his way into history as a person to be noted. A whole book is devoted to a particular period of his life and it can be observed that he was a proven genuine man that passed his crucial examination.

There are particular things that should be realised concerning him that are worthy of close consideration and reproduction.

1/. HE WAS A MAN WHO SET A GREAT STANDARD OF FAITH AND   CONDUCT  1: 1

He is spoken of at the outset as a person who ‘was perfect and upright’ and this surely indicates that he knew what was required of him morally and spiritually and was dedicated to a tremendous creed and conduct that must have impacted and influenced others. He became inspired and motivated with a real reverence for God and this gave him a passion for righteousness and an abhorrence of sin.

2/. HE WAS A MAN WHO OBTAINED THE ACCREDITATION OF GOD – 1: 8

How he lived was taken note of in the right quarters and by the greatest being of all, God, and all about his belief and behaviour was duly approved of. This is highest praise and commendation and really shows and proves he must have achieved a fantastic quality of life. At the end of the day, it is as Paul remarked, ‘It is whom the Lord commends’ that matters – 2 Corinthians 10: 18. Nothing can excel the praise of God!

3/. HE WAS MAN WHO MANAGED HIS HOUSEHOLD IN A WHOLESOME MANNER – 1: 2-5

He had quite a family to superintend, serve and sustain and he appears to have done it in a spiritual manner. There was a desire and jealousy in his heart that his offspring be taught and trained in the knowledge and fear of God and he did everything to press this factor home to them. They were not lacking in a godly father and parent but could see he was deeply committed to their faith and sanctity.

4/. HE WAS A MAN WHO RESPONDED TO GRIEVOUS TRIAL IN AN AMAZING FASHION – 13- 2: 10

The proof of the quality and worth of any man is when they are suddenly thrust into a furnace of great affliction and this certainly happened to him. Nobody would envy him of this tragedy that occurred with the loss of his family and then his own health. Both incidents coming so quickly one after the other would have bowled most people over but he took a situation of calm restraint and simple and sure belief – see 1: 21; 2: 10.

5/. HE WAS A MAN WHO HAD TO ENDURE WRONG ASSESSMENT AND JUDGMENT BY HIS FRIENDS – 2: 11 and onwards

One would have expected better treatment from people who had known his wholesome lifestyle and yet they placed a wrong construction on his calamities. Instead of coming and sustaining his faith and confidence they appear to undo him further and so intensify this dark and difficult stage of life. But he is prepared to answer them and debate the whole issue even though he was the one under the cosh. He endured not only the cursed affliction but also the bad treatment inflicted by words.

  6/.HE WAS A MAN WHO MADE SOME WONDERFUL, CHOICE STATEMENTS WORTHY OF MEDITATION AND BELIEF – 1: 21; 19: 25; 23: 10

Here are at least three declarations of inspired thought that have been a source of inspiration to countless people that came from this choice, prime timer lips: ‘the Lord gave , and the Lord hath taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord’ – ‘ For I know that my Redeemer liveth  . . . .’ – ‘But He knoweth the way that I take . . . .’  It would seem that even passing through this grievous affliction he possesses a deep assurance and holds on to the Lord.

7/. HE WAS A MAN WHO RECEIVED A TREMENDOUS FINAL DIVINE BENEDICTION42: 10-16

The conclusion of this man’s life could not be better because God justified him in a remarkable way before his so-called friends and others. God had His timing and was to prime this godly man again with a manifestation of His outstanding goodness. Having passed the test with honours he is to be rewarded in an incredible manner.

CONCLUSION

One is encouraged to draw strength and inspiration from the life and experience of this man so when we are allowed to be put through our paces by God, and when our principal enemy does his worst, by God’s grace and enabling, we are at our best.

SPECIAL FEATURES IN THE BIBLICAL PRIME TIMERS

There were quite a number of Prime Timers in the Scriptures that can be cited as examples to emulate. Their lives and works are recorded by in the Old and New Testaments in order to serve as an inspiration to succeeding generations. If they could serve the Lord with such distinction in their day in such surroundings of problems and challenges, so it is possible for us. Much can be learned from them that can encourage in our times.

Looking and studying them individually it is possible to highlight and emphasize one outstanding feature that grabs your attention. As each are reviewed it is possible to note what particular point that somewhat dominated their faith and procedure. Other things certainly were manifest but it seems there was in evidence a distinct, divine quality.

In Genesis alone, the book of beginnings there is a disclosure of a number of people who lived and served with distinction and gave a pronounced aspect of character.

  1. ENOCH EXHIBITED A COMMIMENT TO DIVINE COMMUNION – 5: 22-24

When late in life he struck up a close union with God that developed into a long-standing relationship and fellowship that he was not prepared to let go of.

  1. NOAH DEMONSTRATED A DEVOTION TO DIVINE ENTERPRISE – 6-8

He laboured hard and long at a demanding exercise under the direction of God when on in years and did not baulk at the immense project and serves as a pattern of true industry and work. In no way did he quit when maybe he had good reasons to do so.

  1. ABRAHAM REVEALED A DIVINE DEDICATION TO THE DIVINE DYNAMIC OF FAITH – 12-25

Although called at a late period, he did not flounder in unbelief but sets the standard for all to emulate in believing and trusting God with his life of adventure. The principle of faith became the dictating and directing factor.

  1. ISAAC EXPRESSED A QUIET AND CALMNESS OF REST – 26-27

Although not so prominent as others yet he fitted into God’s purpose in a sweet and resigned way. It is good to note how he fell into line and accord with God when he was to be personally sacrificed. This appears to be very much the tone and temper of his divine association.

  1. JACOB DISCLOSED A SPIRIT OF DIVINE DESIRE FOR GOD AND HIS BLESSING – 27- 32

He was captured and captivated early and throughout the whole of his spiritual career in knowing the rich blessing of God. At first he endeavoured to manipulate and get it by craft and by his mother’s manipulation. He was to discover that it would be his because of God’s will and by an intense experience of conflict – Genesis 32: 26.

  1. JOSEPH MANIFESTED A DIVINE TENACITY TO GOD’S REVELATION – 37-50

What an image He sets in relation to the one who was to be the Messiah of Israel! The man reflected the quality character of Christ in type and finally emerges to be the governor of a very large empire, Egypt in the final scenarios of his life. It meant that he had to remain true to God and hold on to his dreams and he was not to be disappointed.

CONCLUSION

It is obvious from all these different choice individuals that they all acquired some singular feature that was acceptable and that made them praiseworthy before God and also to make them people to be commended for their particular spiritual aspects.  All these things, however, must be reproduced in us and can be in later life.

A PRIME TIMER WITH AUTHORITY

Reading    1 Kings 17

Text          v1

Introduction

One of the great characters of OT note is that of Elijah. This rugged and powerful messenger of God was renowned for his spiritual authority. He appears to execute and exude more authority than the monarch, Ahab, who was on the throne of the northern kingdom, Israel. In a distinct, direct and divine manner he challenges the corrupt situation that existed and reveals without question that one person can make a difference when rightly inspired and motivated.

It is possible to come to the conclusion that here was a man and ministry that was divinely primed and timed from beginning to end was duly primed and timed by God. He was wholly disposed toward Jehovah and in love, faith and obedience to Him he discharged of his devotion and dedication to Him.

  1. PRIMED AND TIMED TO CHALLENGE THE LEADERSHIP OF THE NATION – 1 Kings 17: :1

Although he was alone and in a very difficult situation he is quite fearless and ready to take on the principal person who headed the northern territory. He would go as the Lord’s messenger to the palace and perform the task that was required of him. There was a deep sense and conviction in his being that He must serve the Lord and his people and not be intimidated in any way. The situation demanded courage and ina brave, undaunted manner he starts out on his mission and ministry.

         2. PRIMED AND TIMED WITH THE PROPHETIC WORD – 1 Kings 17: 1

In his mind and hearts was the sure word of divine prophecy that must be sounded forth with absolute authority. Within his person he was divinely driven to express the word that would have the approval of Jehovah and be manifested for all to witness. He was an authentic messenger that hade been prepared and was in the right place to proclaim the will and purpose of God to make all aware of the Lord and His sovereignty. Whilst he said ‘my word’ the word that he expressed was the truly the Lord’s.

         3. PRIMED AND TIMED WITH REMARKABLE FAITH TO DEAL WITH EXTRAORDINARY CIRCUMSTANCES – 1 Kings 17: 2-24

He would be thrust into circumstances where he had to believe for the Lord both to provide and preserve him over a long period of time. At Cherith and Zarephath he was to prove the extraordinary supply and power of God in his affairs, the Lord using the ravens and a widow as a means to meet and minister into his needs. But them he was duly primed to bring resurrection life to the widow’s son a sure indication of what was to happening to the nation.

         4. PRIMED AND TIMED TO CONFRONT THE FALSE RELIGIOUS SYTEM IN A MEMORABLE COMBAT – 1 Kings 18

The time came when the situation as to who truly ruled had to be resolved and he was certainly ready and in charge to call the tune and lead the charge. Throughout the whole ordeal he never loses his cool or confidence but makes it evident that there will be an exposure of that which was bogus and counterfeit and that Jehovah would show up to vindicate Himself and confirm his own standing as His servant. He did not treat them lightly nor did he let them off but revealed that the phoney false deities and worship had to be put out of the way and the land cleansed.

         5. PRIMED AND TIMED TO KNOW A UNIQUE ENCOUNTER GOD IN A NEW WAY – 1 Kings 19: 1-14

In hastening away from the scene he had contested he was to discover in a greater way who truly reigned. As he suffered the awful setback and failure the Lord was not leave him in this devastated condition. There was to be the discovery of the Lord in a greater manner that would not only calm him but prepare him for something more significant. He was primed and timed with the consciousness of ‘the still small voice’ that was influence henceforth in a personal and powerful degree. He was to find out that God never God perplexed, overwrought and out of control.

         6. PRIMED AND TIMED TO RAISE A WORTHY SUCCESSOR – 1 Kings 18: 15-21

Never did he think he would be in the place where he would be able to see the birthing and developing of a person who would more than fill his shoes in an admirable fashion. He would witness the appearance of a passionate, loyal understudy that he could coach and mentor that would be ready for the next stage. Instead of dying he would see the next years of his life and work putting something divine into a young man that would be keen, believing and ready to take on the next phase and generation.

         7. PRIMED AND TIME TO ENJOY AN UNUSUAL EXODUS – 2 Kings 2: 1-11

When the moment and day arrived for the cessation of His ministry it is apparent he is all tuned up for the event. He is able to make a visit to the schools of the prophets and delver important last words and to witness the desire and eagerness of his protégé. He knows that Jehovah has planned a memorable departure from his scene of labour and falls in line with it. How he must have enjoyed his sudden exodus!

CONCLUSION

Having seen that God had not only ignited him at the start but kept him full inspired throughout his whole life and ministry, so it is the will and intention this should be so for all who truly are called to serve Him.

Through Jesus Christ, the power of the Holy Spirit and the Word of God we can be primed and timed to serve our day and generation in a similar fashion.

AN EXILED PRIME TIMER

Reading     Revelation 1

GOOD MAN: None would question that John the apostle was a good man that exercised a choice ministry for Christ. A little of his history and doings are found in the Gospels. When he first came to Christ he was rather an explosive character because Christ termed him ‘a son of thunder’ - . But being with Christ and receiving His grace and teaching he became a man of quality and eventually is known as an apostle of love – see his emphasis on love in the letters he wrote. LONG LIFE: He was one of the twelve disciples and apostles that lived to a ripe age. It is reckoned that he was around ninety years of age at the last. Gathering from this fact is the understanding that he must have seen and learned a lot in his lifetime and was treasure house of wisdom. He was an experienced fisherman, schooled by Christ, witnessed the inception of the Christian Church and seen its historic development and played a major role in its leadership. He certainly could be classified as ‘a prime timer’ of the first order. EXILED STATE: Right at the latter part of his life and ministry he is exiled because of his loyalty to the testimony of Jesus Christ – v9. From this statement it is evident that he was carrying some spiritual and powerful influence and was a seeming threat to the world around. The authorities felt that the best thing to do was to place him on a lonely isle where he could not wield any authority or ministry. RIGHT ATTITUDE: From the context of this chapter it is possible to discern and discover that he had the right attitude towards what was taking place. Instead of being angry, alarmed and annoyed at his new surroundings and circumstances, he is somewhat reconciled to them. He is not frustrated or feeling upset in any way but senses they can serve a higher purpose. And they did. There are some choice things he manifests and experiences in these unusual conditions.

1.       HE IS NOT TO BE DISTURBED OVER HIS STATE OF LONELINESS – v9

He had been a very busy man exercising a ministry in looking after the seven churches in Asia Minor. He had been well-loved and received, knowing a lot of people and serving them in a loving and profitable manner. Every day had been an eventful schedule, inputting believers lives and sharing in a dynamic fellowship. His scene is to be dramatically altered but he is ready to be subjected to this abandoned state believing it will hold some spiritual good. It was not to be treated as a negative but a welcome positive in God. At least he would not be exiled from the Lord!

2.      HE PLACES HIMSELF AT THE DISPOSAL OF HIS SOVEREIGN LORD – v10

He would be aware of the fact in his spirit that though shut of from the outside world with its communications; he need not be cut off from relating to the Lord. It would be up to him to keep the contact lines open and this was best done by adopting the right kind of mind and attitude. It was a fresh set of circumstances to him and therefore he must quickly apply himself to showing and developing a right mood. The best thing to do was to put all into the Lord’s hand. After all, He knew all there was to know about him at this point in time.

3.      HE MAKES CERTAIN THAT HE ENJOYS THE PRESENCE AND BLESSING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT – v10

Since the Lord’s return and the descent and ministry of the Holy Spirit, he knew a resource that was ever available. He knew both how to receive and live in the Spirit and this was an inspiring factor to Him. On this particular day he opens himself out for a fresh infilling and anointing of the Holy Spirit and gets all tuned up with heaven. This day he would put himself out to relate to God by the enabling presence of the Spirit.

4.      HE RECEIVES A MIGHTY REVELATION OF THE LORD – vv11-18

He is suddenly alerted and blessed by a heavenly voice that awakens him to something most wonderful, announcing the presence of the Lord. He is given a glorious unveiling of the Lord that just overwhelmed him. In that exiled state he finds out that the Lord was prepared to join him in his loneliness and given him a personal disclosure of His majesty. Whilst he had witnessed the glory of Christ on the Mount of Transfiguration, this was to be uniquely different – Matthew 17: 1-5. The splendour of the King and Superintendent and Archbishop of the Church was to be present and he was to be conscious of the fact that the Lord was fully in charge and control of the churches. He was not exiled from them.
