A LEGACY OF GRACE AND HONOUR

“Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching”. They will be a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck. Proverbs 1:8

What did your father or mother teach you when you were growing up that helps you in your current role? Think about your answer carefully. Make a quick list.

Perhaps that’s a difficult assignment for you. Maybe your mom and dad weren’t around much, or maybe they weren’t very good role models. Or maybe your list could turn into a book. Either way, God wants to step in. Whatever your foundation, He wants to build on it. He might step in by introducing you to His Son, Jesus. He might step in by showing you principles for life through His Word. He might step in through the lives of other people: parents, mentors, coaches, friends, or spouse. He wants to step in to teach and instruct you.

Now, let’s flip the question. What legacy of learning, love, and grace do you want to leave the children in your life? Think about it. Make a quick list. Don’t ignore the question. Decide now that you are going to influence them while they are young and then consider how you might serve as a coach to them when they move into the marketplace.

To attain that eventual goal, you have to have a relationship with these children. You have to earn their trust. You have to know them beyond their surface interests. Do you? What are their passions and skills? What areas of their character need your loving nurturing?

To fill the role of workplace mentor to die children in your life, you also need their respect. What would you not want them to emulate about your current business practices? Decide to change. Tell diem about die mistakes you’ve made, what you’ve learned the hard way, and how you are correcting your mistakes. You have something to offer them. What they learn from you will be their crown of grace and honour.

What kind of legacy are you leaving for the children in your life?
