BEST SO FAR

Best so far!’ Words I love to hear, though I realise they are not an objective response to the latestBrightonTO AM conference. I know that no-one has carefully lined up the various strengths and weaknesses of all the previous conferences, graded them and carefully calculated that 2010 was the best.

In reality God was with us blessing us, teaching us, inspiring and motivating us, and it was great to be there! At the moment the memory of no previous conference seems to eclipse this one and people are excited and appreciative. Surely the prayer night carried ‘best ever’ status with its breadth of personalities, locations, reports and the intense intercession that followed. Can we really be stretched across so many nations, languages and cultures and still be such great friends full of united desires and aspirations?

TRAINING TRACK RECORDINGS

I have been downloading the recordings of several magnificent training tracks which are so diverse and the result of such thorough research and preparation yet delivered with grace and humility. I have been so proud of the quality of those I have so far listened to, such as Theological Trajectories with its respectful yet careful appraisal and critique of Tim Keller’s The Reason for God, NT Wright’s Surprised by Hope and Rob Bell’s Velvet Elvis. The extraordinary breadth of our training tracks includes a wonderful historical review of world mission focussing on William Booth and the Salvation Army, William Carey and Eric Liddell, and the provocative series on ‘Fighting for Charismatic Life in the Church’.

Last year, following Brighton TOAM 2009 over 60,000 downloaded from our conference website and I would urge you not to miss the opportunity to catch up with the great teaching freely available online this year.

STRENGTHENED, ARMED AND PRAYERFUL

I have personally been very encouraged by the response of many to my three sessions from Ephesians 6 on Spiritual Warfare, and have been urged to underline that they were by no means simply Bible studies but God’s actual call to us as a people right now!

We must be good soldiers, being strengthened, armed for conflict and prayerfully involved in apostolic advance. The battle is real. Who would have imagined that immediately prior to the conference we would hear of P-J Smyth’s sudden battle with cancer, and that within days of the conclusion of the conference one of our Newfrontiers pastors would be martyred for his faith, shot dead at close range, leaving a wife and five children (see report on page 15).

We face genuine conflict of literal life and death proportions. Are we ready for this? Are we in warfare mode? God in His grace has provided everything we need and is calling us into battle.

We are so encouraged that at Newday, our teenage event in theUK, nearly 7,000 were being inspired to not only serve the local town with practical social action but also hundreds were saved, hundreds were healed and hundreds responded to the challenge of the nations to hear the gospel.

GRACE AND HEALINGS

Since Brighton TOAM I have had the joy of speaking at a Bible Week inItalywhere a group of churches gathered for a week of concentrated teaching on the Grace of God. Many received fresh revelation, and were liberated and so enthusiastic about such an encounter with God’s presence in His Word. Several were healed and there are plans to translate and publish God’s Lavish Grace in Italian.

On his return to East Grinstead, Steve Alliston, who had been with me, reported to his local church about the healings that had taken place. At the conclusion of the meeting one man was prayed for who was due in hospital later that day for an operation on the Monday morning to remove his stomach and take out large growths. He had been in pain for years and so inflamed that he had to wear dungarees as he could no longer cope with a waistband on normal trousers. On the following day new CT scans were taken and the hospital couldn’t understand why they were so different from the ones of the previous month. There were no traces of growths and all inflammation had gone. They had expected surgery to last for hours and told him to expect ten days in hospital. Instead they gave him a meal and sent him home that afternoon!

THE TIDE IS TURNING

These accounts of healing vividly remind me of the beginnings of the charismatic movement. I remember hearing of increasing numbers of individuals from different parts of theUKwho were receiving the Holy Spirit and speaking with tongues. Something fresh was happening on an increasingly wide scale. Soon the charismatic movement would be sweeping the nations.

Now I hear repeated stories of healings and powerful manifestations of the presence of God’s Spirit in the meetings and on the streets. Healing seems so much more accessible! What will local churches look like in two or three years?

When recently invited to a debate on charismatic issues among 800-900 pastors in London, I was asked if I did not realise that by the time 2 Timothy was written spiritual gifts had already disappeared! The best answer to that interpretation of Scripture is not to argue one Bible verse against another but to go in faith to the towns and cities of our nations, preach the gospel and heal the sick as Jesus told us to.

The battle is on. Let’s be strengthened, get our armour on and prayerfully spread the love of Jesus!

Meet the Ministers

Rev. Jim Mackenzie

Jim was born and brought up in a remote glen inScotland, between Pitlochry and Blairgowrie, but life began again for him in early 1981 when he gave his life to Jesus Christ at a F.G.B.F.I. meeting inDundee. At that time he was working as a van-salesman for Ever-Ready Ltd. Within five months of submitting his life to Jesus he was promoted to position of Sales Area Manager in the Yorkshire/Derbyshire area. So with wife Wyn, and three daughters, he moved to Ranskill, in North Nottinghamshire. Ranskill is two miles from theAOGBibleCollegeat Mattersey, and they joined the Fellowship that met in the grounds of the College. There he spent many years working as a Deacon and running the Good News Children’s Club. That Fellowship eventually moved to join with the AOG Pentecostal Church in nearby Retford.

In 1993 Jim and Wyn moved to live in South Kirkby, a mining town inWest Yorkshire. With good friend Pastor Martin Sullivan, they helped build up the church there. In 1998 they moved again toNewLifeChurch,Wakefieldand came under Pastor Henry Drabble. New Life was experiencing ‘Renewal’ at that time and seeing God move in wonderful ways. Jim was made an Elder and served both the church inWakefieldand theDaughterChurchin nearby Rothwell for many years. Unfortunately, tragedy struck during this time and Wyn went to be with the Lord when she suffered a blood clot to the heart after an operation on her hip.

Life can shatter us, but the Lord has a way of picking us up and restoring. Jim met up again with a family friend, Sue Clayton, and they married in theNewLifeChurch, Retford, in the summer of 2002. They set up home inWakefieldand in 2004 Jim and Sue began to serve the Lord in a new way. They were asked to visit and preach in the smaller churches in theEast Pennineregion. This led to them being invited to Pastor the Pentecostal Church at Hedon, Nr. Hull, which is now the Christian Life Church. They moved house to nearby Burstwick and have been serving the Lord in Hedon and area since 2006.

FULFILMENT IN LIFE

Senior Living Ministries

“Sluggards do not plough in season; so at harvest time they look but find nothing” Proverbs 20:4

An old mountaineer and his wife were sitting in front of the fireplace one evening just passing the time. Soon, they heard what they thought were raindrops falling on the roof of their small house. So after a few minutes, the wife said, “Jed, I think it’s raining. Go outside and see.”

The old man continued to gaze into the fire for a brief moment, sighed, and said, “Why don’t we just call in the dog and see if he’s wet.”

There’s no doubt that, just like that farmer, there are those days when you just don’t feel like doing much. But the problem with so many today is that one day turns to two, then a week, then months go by and you’re still just calling in the dog to see if it’s raining outside!

Now there are different reasons for being “sluggish”. Some of involve your physical or emotional state. Yet all too often, sluggishness is simply an indication of laziness, which the Bible says will have a negative impact on your life.

So if you find yourself having feelings of sluggishness, first, figure out why. Is it because you’re having physical problems? Are you dealing emotions, like depression, that affect your desire to be active? Or, have you perhaps just become a little lazy? Whatever it is, find ways to stay active. Not only will you be healthier, but you’ll also find greater fulfilment in life!

PRAYER CHALLENGE

Pray that God would help you find ways to stay active and find greater fulfilment in life!

Healing Testimonies

AN INSTANTANEOUS HEALING AT BRIXTON

Testimony of the deputy Principal of Banbury’s College, Leicester

Seventeen years ago I met with an accident at Grimsbyon a ship and fractured my knee cap. The fracture was so complete that all the oil in my knee cap formed a substance at the bottom of the leg. The infirmary authorities wanted me to have my leg ‘wired’, but I refused and was told I should have a stiff leg for life. I engaged a bone-setter, and although he did his work well, I had temporary paralysis for three months.

I attended the healing service at the Brixton Tent held by Principal George Jeffreys on Sunday, 16th June, 1929, having previously prayed that God would help me to be cured in one of three things:

(1) That l should be healed of an internal trouble.

(2) That He would make my eyesight better.

(3) That ‘He would heal my knee-cap.

I have been unable for many years to engage in any form of recreation, or walk any distance, and could get up and downstairs only with difficulty and by the aid of the banisters. Within three minutes of the laying-on of hands and the offering of prayer by the Principal, I felt the healing touch of the Divine Master and immediately exclaimed, in “I am healed!” I then rose, again tested the leg, found that I could move it in all directions, that l was able to swing- it to and fro, that the ligaments were free and (or loose) that l could kneel without pain on the right knee-cap. I again tested it on the bus, running upstairs, and I then had no doubt that the cure was permanent. On arrival inLeicester, I practiced running upstairs to amazement of several who came to visit me.

At the healing meeting many others gave testimony to being cured of blindness cancer, consumption and other diseases.
