THE HOLY SPIRIT. (12)

After Jesus rose from the dead, He appeared to His disciples for 40 days, He then ascended to heaven before their eyes. However, Jesus gave all His followers a very special and wonderful promise, that He would not leave us alone, but that He would send the Holy Spirit (Jn 16:7).

1. THE HOLY SPIRIT IS GOD.

Acts 5:3-4. The first thing we must understand about the Holy Spirit is that He is indeed God. He has chosen to express Himself to mankind as Father, as Son and as the Holy Spirit – an expression of three distinct Persons, yet the three are one.

2. THE WORK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT.

Acts 2:38-39. He is the Father’s gift to every believer (Acts 1:4), to help us firstly to love and know God more and secondly to be a witness of His love to the world (Mt 22:36-40). Jesus said of the Holy Spirit, “He will glorify Me” and “He will testify of Me” (Jn 16:14. 15:26. NKJ). We see this:-

a) In the believer’s personal life. When a person believes in Jesus and receives the salvation He offers, he is born again of His Spirit (Jn 3:3-8).

* The Holy Spirit then testifies of our relationship with God. Rom 8:16.

* He teaches us His ways. Jn 14:26.

* He brings a fresh understanding of the Word of God. Jn 16:13.

* He guides us. Rom 8:14.

* He helps us live a life pleasing to God. Gal 5:16.

b) In the believer for service. As well as giving the Spirit to dwell in the believer, God also wants to fill and baptise us with the Holy Spirit.

* The Holy Spirit gives power and boldness to witness. Acts 4:29-31. Jesus said to His disciples, “when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, you will receive power and will tell people about Me everywhere …. ,” (Acts 1:8).

* He introduces us to the supernatural realm. I Cor 12:4, 7-11. When God poured out His Spirit on the early church, “everyone present … began speaking in other tongues, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability” (Acts 2:4).

* He fills our spirit with true worship to God. Eph 5:18-19. Jesus said, “God is Spirit, so those who worship Him must worship in spirit and in truth” (Jn 4:24).

* He helps us in prayer. Rom 8:26. Paul wrote to the Christians atEphesus, “Pray at all times and on every occasion in the Power of the Holy Spirit” (Eph 6:18).

3. HOW TO BE BAPTISED IN THE HOLY SPIRIT.

God wants those who are born again of His Spirit to be filled to overflowing with power to serve Him. John the Baptist said of Jesus, “He will baptise you with the Holy Spirit and with fire” (Mt 3:11). We need therefore to come to Jesus for this great blessing.

a) It is a gift promised by God – so ask Him for it. Lk 11:9-13. Peter said of the baptism, “This promise is to you and to your children and even to the Gentiles – all who have been called by the Lord our God” (Acts 3:39).

b) Receive by faith – then praise Him for the gift. Jn 7:37-39. In this passage Jesus gave three conditions to our receiving this flow of “rivers of living water” – a thirsting after Him, a coming to Him and putting our faith into operation by drinking in of His Spirit.

c) Speak out with a new supernatural language – as the Spirit gives you the words. Acts 19:6. As we drink in His very Being, so now we by faith express His Presence by speaking out in our new spiritual language. Paul wrote to the church atCorinth, “I wish that you all had the gift of speaking in tongues” (I Cor 14:5).

MY COMMITMENT

I thank God for the gift of the Holy Spirit in my life. I make a decision today to learn to listen for His voice in my heart and to respond to His promptings and directing. I choose to ask Jesus that He will baptise me in the Holy Spirit.

A Message by the late David Wilkerson

Rev. David Wilkerson

DETAILED DIRECTIONS AND UNCLOUDED DECISIONS!

God’s purpose for every one of his children is that we surrender to the reign and rulership of the Holy Spirit:

“If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit” (Galatians 5:25). In other words, “If he lives in you, let him direct you!”

I want to show you what it means to walk in the Spirit. I have not yet fully arrived in this glorious walk—but I am gaining ground!

We have heard the expression “walk in the Spirit” all our lives, but what does it really mean? I believe the 16th chapter of Acts is one of the best examples of what it means to walk in the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Ghost provides absolute, clearly detailed instructions to those who walk in him. If you walk in the Spirit, then you don’t walk in confusion—your decisions aren’t clouded ones.

The early Christians did not walk in confusion. They were led by the Spirit in every decision, every move, every action! The Spirit talked to them and directed them in their every waking hour. No decision was made without consulting him. The church’s motto throughout the New Testament was: “He who has ears to hear, let him hear what the Spirit has to say!”

I began ministering inNew York Citybecause the Holy Ghost told me very clearly: “Go toNew York Cityand raise up a church.” And he told me when to come. No devil or demon could move me from this—because the Spirit gave detailed instructions. I remember standing betweenBroadway and Seventh Avenue, weeping and raising my hands. The Holy Ghost said, “In this very area I am going to raise up a church. Obey me, David. Start a church inNew York City!”Times SquareChurchis not an accident. It is the result of clear, detailed instructions from the Holy Spirit!

Healing Testimonies

Miss Alice Sturley

A WONDERFUL MIRACLE

At Principal George Jeffreys’ Birmingham Campaign

I cannot say how grateful to God I am, for sending1 Principal George Jeffreys toBirmingham. Had it not been so, I might have gone on being a cripple unto the end of my days; but, glory be to God, I am healed! I am writing my testimony so that it may help someone else to have faith in my Saviour. I have been converted for twenty-one years, but had never had sufficient faith to trust Him; but from now, I am determined to trust Him for everything.

I have been a Salvationist nearly all my life, for I went to the Army Sunday school as a child, and now have a class of my own.

When I was eighteen months old, I fell downstairs, and because I did not cry, and no bruises were seen, it was thought that I was not hurt. But I did not commence to walk until I was three years old. Then my mother noticed that I did not put my left leg to the ground, and when I tried to walk, would drag it after me. I was taken to the Children’s Hospital inBirmingham, and treated for two years as an out-patient with a dislocated hip, but the doctors could not do anything for me. I was then taken toDudleyRoadHospitaland was strapped down in bed for six weeks, but with no results. The doctor there said nothing could be done unless I had an operation, but he could not perform this as I had a weak heart. He told my mother that I would not live to be eleven.

When I was ten years old I went intoWestBromwichHospitalfor three weeks, but the doctor there said nothing could be done. Years went on, and my leg was getting worse, and causing me dreadful pain at times. I used to fall down without any warning. I went into domestic service, but had to leave on account of my leg. I then went intoSellyOakHospital, I was sixteen years of age at this time, and the doctors there could not do anything for me, except recommend a surgical boot. This helped me with my walking, but did not ease the pain; night after night I did not sleep, and could not get any ease, and my mother could not do anything to relieve me.

On Sunday, March 30th, 1930, I was asked to go to the Revival Campaign meetings, but I tried to make the excuse that I had my class to attend to. A substitute was found, however, and I came, though with very mixed feelings: and when you gave the invitation I went out with many others that afternoon and was the first to be prayed for.  When I got out into the aisle of Ebenezer Chapel,  I trembled from head to foot,  and whilst crossing the road with my friends afterwards I felt a twitching and a prickly sensation in my left hip,  and then in my knee.    Before this it was always the right leg that caused me pain, and  I   remarked to my friends  the feeling  in my leg. God   must   have   worked   immediately,   for   when   I reached home at night,  I found that in my left hip, which had always been  so much larger than the right one,  the bone had gone  back  into  its  place.    Hallelujah!

At first I thought it was imagination, but no, it was quite all right. I rushed upstairs to my mother, who was nearly asleep in bed, and got her up to feel my hip. She asserted that it had gone back into its place, and both hips were the same. Oh how I thanked God and asked Him still to give me more faith, and that He would make me bolder to speak for Him. Then another difficulty presented itself, if I believed God had healed me. I must leave off my surgical shoe, but where was the money coming from to buy a pair of ordinary shoes (I had not done any work for over four years through ill-health); Then I prayed that God would help me in my difficulty, and praise the Lord, He sent along a friend, who gave me a letter to get some shoes, and said I could pay back when I started to work. How glad I was to leave the heavy burden off, and how proud I felt as I held my surgical shoes up on the platform, I have since burned three boots and a shoe, but am still keeping one to shew people what God has done for me. I give Him all the glory.

CHEERFUL SERVICE

Senior Life Ministries

“Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver”2 Corinthians 9:7

A pastor once recounted how, as a child, his mother sent him to pick a quart of raspberries. Reluctantly he dragged himself to the berry patch. His afternoon was ruined for sure. Then a thought hit him. He would surprise his mother and pick two quarts of raspberries instead of one!

Rather than drudgery, his work now became a challenge. He enjoyed picking those raspberries so much that fifty years later, that incident was still fresh in his mind.

His job hadn’t changed, but his attitude did. Instead of focusing on the hard work of picking berries, he focused on how he could use his time to bless his mother. And it was this change in perspective that made his job so much easier.

Many Christians today see giving as a task or a chore that they check off a list so they don’t get in trouble. Sadly, because this is their perspective, they miss out on the joy that comes by contributing to God’s purposes.

But what if, instead, you thought of giving with the end goal of supporting God’s work in mind? You see, when you give, you bless others and you show God’s love to those who need it. Giving is not about putting a little money in the offering plate, it’s about being an active part of God’s work here on earth. And when you see it that way, you can’t help but give cheerfully!

PRAYER CHALLENGE

Ask God to give you a Kingdom perspective when it comes to giving. Pray that when you give, you would do so with His purposes in mind and because of that, you would give cheerfully!
