The Power of Possibility

By Phill Clayton

You can do more than you think, according to Dr Phill. You’re Looking Great’s motivational guru, Phill Clayton, attempts to unleash the power of possibility in your life. Come on, now is your time to think out of the box, rise to the potential within you, and launch yourself into the world. The sky’s the limit!

In the words of a man who has flown around the world in a hot air balloon … ’screw it, just do it’. That man is, of course, Richard Branson who has never written a C.V. in his life and has made Virgin a household name.

When I read his story two thoughts rushed into my head simultaneously colliding and instantly creating a headache that would not go away! “I want to be like this … but … how can I ever be like this?”

To some extent we all do this. We look around us and watch what people are doing, be it our heroes, characters on the television, people down our local pub, or at the gym. We often compare ourselves to these people wishing that we could be like them and we find ourselves saying such things as ‘if only I had enough time’, or ‘ I wish I had the courage to do that’. When we find ourselves making these absolute statements we are closing the door of possibility in our lives. Now unlike Mr. Branson I have written many C.Vs; it’s not necessarily about copying those around you but getting the spirit of ‘give it a go’. It is realizing that you can do more than you think you are capable of doing by seeing life through the lens of opportunity.

So how can you unleash the power of possibility in your life?

You Can Do More Than You Think

I studied history at university where anything over 6 hours lecture time a week was immoral and deemed a breach of the department’s ethical code of conduct! In the first year with only a 40% pass rate needed, many were tempted to watch television, wake up late and go out even later! However I was a little different. I went to uni wanting to gain two things, opportunity and experience. In my first year I started a regular music event in a local coffee shop and went on to become heavily involved with Union politics. I also sat on committees and joined various societies. I learnt to snowboard and write poetry. I also held down a job in a bank! It was a jam-packed life and I thought nothing of working late or early! Once I had started trying new things I realized I could do so much more than I thought possible and giving new things a go became easier and more fun.

I have recently had the privilege of meeting a young man called David who epitomizes this point of increasing your capacity. He is 20 years old and has been working full-time since he was 16. He owns two houses and is currently a full-time banking advisor and a full-time student completing a Masters in economics! He has grasped the concept of possibility. What we are capable of is far greater than we think. Don’t be held back, don’t think small, give it a go.

Give it a Go

The point is not to copy other people’s stories but write your own for others to tell. The reason why so many people don’t ‘give it a go’ is because they are afraid of failing. When Jamie Oliver started his campaign for healthy school dinners he did not know if it would succeed. When I tried snowboarding I didn’t know if I would like it. When David decided to work full-time and study he didn’t know how it would work out. It is the spirit of ‘give it a go’ that creates great stories. In the Sheffield University Students’ Union there is a student programme which has won various national awards and is now being copied by many more university unions across the country. It is called the ‘Give it a Go’ scheme. It is a programme of taster sessions that don’t require commitment and don’t cost much at all. The idea is to encourage students to try something new and if it doesn’t suit them then they can try something else. This is a great life lesson. The ‘give it a go’ spirit sets you free from the fear of failure. It sets you free to explore and experiment with new hobbies, new styles and new ideas. Have a ‘give it a go’ mentality and as Richard Branson said ’screw it, just do it!’

Go with the Flow

When you give something a go, for example horse riding, you try it out at the weekend. You book a special session with your best friend and just give it a go. If you discover that you’re not very good at it you will go again next week determined to be like all the other horse riders who can gallop around effortlessly. Instead of seeing them as a hindrance you see them as a goal, something to aim towards. You discover that you actually do have time to take up a hobby and you start to make more time because you are inspired to reach a new level. It is a challenge and it is fun. This is the third point … go with the flow. Once you have stepped into possibility thinking, you start to gain momentum. You picture what you want to achieve and that drives you to do it. You have given it a go and suddenly you realize you can do more than you thought and now the vision of growth and maturity in your new found hobby or lifestyle pushes you to achieve more and go further. Soon you realize that instead of using up energy you are gaining energy and begin to wonder what else is possible… you have now progressed into the realm of possibility and the sky really is the limit. Don’t just dream about it, do it!

Leadership Factors adapted by Rev. E. Anderson

Rev. E. Anderson

Presented to you is a Christian Leadership Course that is purposed to provoke many to embrace the call of Christ to leadership within His Church. The series will come in the form of a study each week, which will be in two parts thus covering two weeks over the site. My prayer and desire is that such will help many in the summons of Christ to serve Him in these tremendous days.

CHRISTIAN LEADERSHIP COURSE

Study 2                        CHRISTIAN LEADERSHIP REQUIRED  (continued)

4/.  BECAUSE IT IS ESSENTIAL TO DISCOVER THE ALL-IMPORTANT ROLE THAT CHRIST FULFILS IN IT ALL.

It is leadership with Christ at the hub of it all. He must have the pre-eminence in it. He is the Church’s true and real Founder and Leader and it stands or falls in relation to Him. The Scriptures make the declaration with regard to Him “that in all things He might have the preeminence” Colossians 3: 18 and this includes the issue of leadership. He is the leading light and focus must always be towards Him. The original call to every Christian is to ‘Follow Him’ and this must never be deviated from because He is the only One that can develop the leader according to His mind and purpose, provide the all-essential to effect and to produce to maximum potential. After all, He is the One that seeks the progress and the success of the individual that He calls into His ministry and mission so each leader must keep Him paramount in the outworking.

5/.  BECAUSE IT IS POSSIBLE TO HAVE A LEADERSHIP THAT IS NOT CREATED AND CULTIVATED BY HIM.

Even in Christendom there can come the appointment of personnel who have not been divinely selected and appointed. Because the Church seems to offer the opportunity of a public role especially in the realm of speaking and eloquence and attracting an audience and a measure of adulation, the danger is ever current for individuals to desire this position. Years ago, it became a practice in the United Kingdom that if a man failed to make it in other business concerns then he could go into the ministry of the Church. Even if a person has tremendous natural talents in terms of education and elocution, such are not the basis for this important work. It must ever be borne in mind that this is not a human profession and it is not something we simply down to our offspring. One has resisted the temptation to coerce my own sons in this direction much as one would have loved to have this occur. The vital consideration is that the Lord has leaders that He chooses and it is far better and rewarding to have one’s offspring doing what the Lord desires in other occupations. Many were in leadership in Old Testament times that had no calling, gifting or anointing and so a spiritual nation was made to suffer the consequences.

6/. BECAUSE IT IS CHRISTIAN LEADERSHIP THAT WILL MAKE ALL THE UNIQUE DIFFERENCE TO THE CHURCH IN ITS FUNCTION, PROGRESS AND SUCCESS.

The imperative for the Church in these critical days is to see it operating in the way that God has planned and ordained. The only hope of it being a major influence is by proceeding on the lines that He has determined. If the life and leadership of Jesus Christ was such a huge success and lasting, it can be put down to the fact that it was carried out in the manner that was divinely ordained. He made a unique difference to the men around Him and to the world by reason of His total commitment to doing things that had been pre-planned.  The imperative in His person was, “I must be about my Father’s business.’ – Luke 2:49, and He sought to do it God’s way and He achieved this end – John 8:29; 17:4.  Those embraced and engaged by Him must know there is a predetermined path ordained to the fulfilling of His expectations in this area. Paul affirms that we are His workmanship – Ephesians 2: 10 and surely this must include leadership within and over His body. One translation has it: “we are His handiwork.” He has His hands on the leader and the plans and seeks to bring both together in a cohesive union so that all is worked out according to heaven’s design. Christian leaders have an enormous task to fulfill in bringing forth a spiritual body functioning to its maximum – Ephesians 4: 12. There is a perfect illustration of this in the Old Testament in the construction of the Tabernacle. God had created skilled artisans who had all kinds of skills to produce this beautiful habitation for God. But He also gave the absolute and perfect blueprint to which to work to so that everything would be brought to completion and to its true function.

7/.  BECAUSE CHRISTIAN LEADERSHIP THAT IS GENUINE AND SPIRITUALLY DYNAMIC WILL MAKE AN IMPACT UPON THE WORLD AROUND.

There is little doubt within the mind of Jesus Christ that He determined that the Christian Church should have a powerful ministry into the world scene. In no way did He see the word dictating to the Church, rather, the Church should make staggering inroads into it and bringing His rule and reign there. As Christ’s leadership is accepted and applied, there will be this kind of thing. In His day, through His life and Holy Spirit ministry, He attracted the multitudes and was able to affect them in so many divine ways. He was not a victim to the philosophies and ideas of men but made them view things differently. Life and work was radical and everyone became aware of it. The New Testament expresses a leadership that followed in His tracks and saw the continuance of His leadership and power. Christ gave a world-wide program to those first leaders and they did not shirk or shrink back from the gigantic task but knew through His leading and input it could be accomplished. It did not matter what obstacles and opposition was placed before it, there was the divine sense and conviction that all could be brought to pass according to the wish and will of their Founder-Leader. They realized they had been called by Christ to lead His Church in the world and to effect the world and sensed who they were and what they possessed in and through Him. “Leadership is not technique, expertise, skill.  It’s who you are.”         E. Friedman

8/.  BECAUSE WITHOUT CHRISTIAN LEADERSHIP THE BODY OF CHRIST WILL NOT COME TO FULL DEVELOPMENT, VOCATION AND USEFULNESS.

Believers need to find quickly their place, role and function within the body and to have their lives and gifts exploited to the best and to the full and this where leadership should fulfil its ministry. Leadership must not opt out of its spiritual and moral responsibilities of training and inputting the Christian community it is called to serve. The finest is that of getting everyone sensing their worth and wealth in Christ and seeing both character and charisma released to its utmost. One of the major problems that exists with regard to the body of Christ is the failure to see it properly and fully functioning. In many cases at local church level there is mal-function or dysfunctional and in some cases no function. The tragic consequence is upon the body of believers themselves and such becomes a parody to evil powers and the world. Christian leaders must get to terms with this aspect because it is one of the main reasons for their being and ministry. Everyone is important and has a work and destiny and it is necessary that all should be made aware of their worth and role – 1 Corinthians 12:12-31 – Living Bible.

9/.  BECAUSE IN THE ULTIMATE CHRISTIAN LEADERSHIP WILL BE ASSESSED AND JUDGED BY CHRIST.

It is a solemn fact that the day is to be when leaders in particular will have to appear before the One who called them to serve in the capacity of leaders and the leadership issue will be under revue – 1 Corinthians 3. Paul alludes to his role as a leader as being a planter and Apollos being a waterer but in the ultimate both will stand before Christ to be rightly judged according to their work and labour – see also 2 Corinthians 5:10. Christ rebuked and condemned the religious leaders of His day because they failed to take their leadership sacredly, seriously and solemnly before God and acted irresponsibly with the privilege and opportunity granted them. They were more concerned about their own standing and status than about God and the real spiritual demands of the people and so received His censure.

10/.  BECAUSE THERE IS A DEMAND FOR THE DIVINE CREATION AND CULTIVATION OF CHRISTIAN LEADERSHIP WITHIN CHRISTENDOM; IT IS A MUST AND A PRIORITY.

It is seen in what they do. Gunter Krallman:  Why Spiritual leaders are needed   -  It can be seen from this list why there is such a call and demand for divine personnel with divine potential. BECAUSE : - they take initiative for God          Judges 5: 2; 2 Chronicles14::2-4- they receive and communicate God’s direction    Exodus 25: 22; Deuteronomy 5: 5- they lead the way for God’s people       Deuteronomy 10: 11; 2 Chronicles 34 :31-33- they motivate others to follow                       Nehemiah 2: 17,18; 1 Chronicles 12: 16-18- they care for their followers Hebrew13:17;1 Thessalonians  2: 11- they take their followers’ needs to God          Numbers 27: 5; 1 Samuel 12: 23- they facilitate their followers progress   1 Kings 11:28; 2 Corinthians 13: 9,10- they train their followers into leader  Mark 1:17; 2 Timothy  2: 2
