IN UTMOST DEDICATION

NEHEMIAH 1

This individual stands out on the pages of Holy Writ as a person who knew God to such an extent that he was prepared to show utmost dedication to Him and a worthy divine cause. He was suitably and comfortably placed from a natural standpoint, but his awareness of God and the existent situation led him to a unique devotion of life and work that wrought a memorable history. A love and service to Jehovah was rendered that provoked many others to a work that seemingly was impossible but came to fruition. It was more than a mere mental evaluation: it was knowledge that switched him on to decisive action of a noble and inspiring kind.

1/.  IT WAS EXPRESSED IN GENUINE INQUIRY – 1: 1-3

He sought to be properly and perfectly informed as to how conditions really were in the homeland and especially with regard to the holy city, Jerusalem. He was deeply concerned about the Lord’s dwelling place and state of His people and could not remain in indifference. It was a very relevant matter: God, His people and the focal point of residence etc. What he heard from the messengers moved him profoundly. The knowledge had immediate impact.

2/.  IT WAS EVINCED IN SINCERE PRAYER AND SEEKING OF GOD -1: 4-11

A brokenness of spirit was immediately reflected and he was driven to weep, fast, pray and humble himself before the Lord and prayed with a great sense of knowledge and understanding. There was a spiritual comprehension of the whole situation on every front. A consciousness of the awesome nature of God and the fact of the power of prayer possessed his being. He gave himself in the first instance to God and prayer and admitted that the mess that his people and he were in were all due to their sinful conduct. He was desirous that things would be remarkably changed by divine intervention and by God’s mercy.

3/. IT WAS EXERCISED IN AN HONEST ENTERPRISE – 2

The ball had started rolling and would not be stopped and he finds himself in God heading an enterprise that was to bring about a radical transformation. He is ready to dedicate himself at the outset and to do what he could to amend the awful state and so engages in honest and earnest pursuit of God’s will. The king could see it and also the people when he got to Jerusalem.

4/.  IT WAS ESTABLISHED IN WISE PROCEDURE – 3-6

He so knew God that he could pray and know His help in so many difficult and awkward moments. There were peoples and things that ever threatened him and the job in hand, but divine wisdom and strength was afforded to succeed.

5/.  IT WAS ENSURED IN FURTHER PLANNED ACTION - 7-13

There was not only to be the re-building of the wall, there had to be the security of the city, the re-building of the people in God, etc., but he kept at it.
